Yin Water Rabbit (Gui Mao, 癸卯) day pillar
A Yin Water day master, the Mist, sitting on the Rabbit.
Your day pillar is the pair of characters for the day you were born. The top one, the stem, is your day master — you. The bottom one, the branch, is what it sits on. The sixty pillars come round in turn, one a day, so about one person in sixty was born on a Gui Mao day.
Its sound element: Gold Leaf (Jin Bo Jin, 金箔金)
The sixty pillars go in pairs, and each pair carries a sound element (Na Yin, 纳音) — an image, separate from the element of the stem. The classic San Ming Tong Hui (三命通会) describes each pillar by it:
Rings, buttons and bells; likes strong Fire, and autumn.
环钮钤铎,喜盛火及秋
What the Rabbit holds, and what it is to Yin Water
Each branch holds one to three stems. The ones under your own day master are the closest things to you in the chart.
- Yin Wood (Yi, 乙), the main one — Eating God (Shi Shen, 食神). What you produce, same polarity. Output that comes easily: making, feeding, expressing, without strain.
In San Ming Tong Hui’s section on where each stem is born and dies, the Rabbit is where Yin Water is born (Chang Sheng, 长生).
A Gui Mao day at each birth hour: San Ming Tong Hui (三命通会)
Two volumes of this classic go hour by hour, and at each hour say something about this exact day pillar. These are its sentences on a Gui Mao day; what it says about the other five Yin Water days is on the Yin Water day master page. Hours are true solar time, not clock time.

Named days in Yuan Hai Zi Ping (渊海子平)
These are decided by the day pillar alone, so everyone born on a Gui Mao day is in them. The work attaches conditions to most of them; the passage is given whole.
Honour on the day
The day pillar is one of Fire Rooster (丁酉), Fire Pig (丁亥), Water Snake (癸巳) or Water Rabbit (癸卯). The work adds that it most fears punishment, clash, breaking and harm; that part is not judged here.
日贵者何?即甲戊兼牛羊之类。止有四日:丁酉、丁亥、癸巳、癸卯耳;最怕刑冲破害。
The Rabbit and the other animals
When the day branch meets these — in a year, a ten-year luck period, or someone else’s chart — the classics read it by these relationships.
- Clashes with
- Rooster
- Pairs with (six harmony)

- In a trine with
