Yin Metal Rooster (Xin You, 辛酉) day pillar
A Yin Metal day master, the Jewel, sitting on the Rooster.
Your day pillar is the pair of characters for the day you were born. The top one, the stem, is your day master — you. The bottom one, the branch, is what it sits on. The sixty pillars come round in turn, one a day, so about one person in sixty was born on a Xin You day.

Each branch holds one to three stems. The ones under your own day master are the closest things to you in the chart.
- Yin Metal (Xin, 辛), the main one — Friend (Bi Jian, 比肩). Same element, same polarity as you. A peer: someone standing where you stand, competing for the same thing and equally able to share the load.
In San Ming Tong Hui’s section on where each stem is born and dies, the Rooster is the seat of Yin Metal’s salary (Lu, 禄), where it is strongest.

Rat hour 23:00–01:00 · Yang Earth Rat (Wu Zi, 戊子)
born in Rat (子) or Rooster (酉) months with no Yang Fire (丙) or Yin Fire (丁), and not running a southern period, third or fourth grade, noble; it injures wife and children; a military office with weighty authority. The Shen Bai Jing (神白经) says: Metal and Fire transforming govern nobility, and it comes out after breaking the ancestors. It dislikes a Water Tiger (壬寅) month, a bad death; a Metal Snake (辛巳) month, great ruin and ill to the ancestors; a Metal Dog (庚戌) month, a bad death. The six Yin Metal (辛) days meeting the Earth Rat (戊子) hour are called the pure and conspicuous qi of the heavenly court. Metal Rooster (辛酉) and Metal Pig (辛亥) getting it are highest. It dislikes a Fire Tiger (丙寅) month, dying without a whole body; a Fire Monkey (丙申) month, losing the home village and a bad death; a Fire Rooster (丁酉) month, loss and a bad death.
子酉月生，无丙丁火，不行南运，三、四品贵。伤妻子；武职权重。《神白经》云：金火化，主贵，破祖方发。忌壬寅月，凶死。辛已月，大败，祖凶。庚戌月，凶死。
Ox hour 01:00–03:00 · Yin Earth Ox (Ji Chou, 己丑)
breaking the ancestors. Snake (巳), Rooster (酉) and Ox (丑) months, the Metal in quantity controls the Wood, handsome and with money, wife and children hard to keep. Tiger (寅) and Horse (午) months, close to the throne, noble.

Tiger hour 03:00–05:00 · Yang Metal Tiger (Geng Yin, 庚寅)
noble. Spring, wealth gathers; summer, officer and the prosperity star (禄) made; autumn, the self strong; Pig (亥), Rat (子), Ox (丑), Dog (戌), Horse (午) and Rooster (酉) in year or month, all noble.

Rabbit hour 05:00–07:00 · Yin Metal Rabbit (Xin Mao, 辛卯)
coming out solitary and bitter, getting blessing in middle age, and in the last years enfeoffing the wife and shading the children, noble. A Snake (巳) month, officer and Resource (印) meeting the Heavenly Virtue (天德), noble to the first grade. An Ox (丑) month with Wood and Fire periods, middling nobility. Dragon hour 07:00–09:00 · Yang Water Dragon (Ren Chen, 壬辰)
spring, wealth and rank both complete. Summer good. Autumn, the self strong, noble. Winter, a plain commoner; a Rat (子) month, the Yin Metal (辛) produced on its ground, the hall of learning, governing letters. Year and month with Fire to complete the crossing, noble. A Wood Dog (甲戌) month, third grade.

Snake hour 09:00–11:00 · Yin Water Snake (Gui Si, 癸巳)
conspicuously noble, heavy in wine and women. Tiger (寅) and Rabbit (卯), the wealth strong, favourable. Ox (丑), the triad complete, wealth and rank.
贵显，酒色重。寅卯，财旺，吉。丑，三合全，富贵。
Horse hour 11:00–13:00 · Yang Wood Horse (Jia Wu, 甲午)
spring, the wealth strong; summer, officer and nobility — both favourable. Autumn, the self robust, and though wealthy it does not last. Winter ordinary.
春，财旺；夏，官贵，俱吉。秋，身强，虽富不永，冬，平常。
Goat hour 13:00–15:00 · Yin Wood Goat (Yi Wei, 乙未)
where the month carries Fire qi and it runs an eastern period, noble. Dragon (辰), Dog (戌), Ox (丑) and Goat (未), best of all. Pig (亥) and Rabbit (卯), conspicuously noble but not for long. Born in autumn, the self too strong and wealth and officer without qi, ill and an early death.
月通火气，行东运，贵。辰戌丑未，最吉。亥卯，贵显不久。秋生，身太旺，财官无气，凶夭。
Monkey hour 15:00–17:00 · Yang Fire Monkey (Bing Shen, 丙申)
Tiger (寅), Snake (巳), Horse (午) and Dog (戌) months, the officer strong, glory and nobility. The Shen Bai Jing (神白经) says: transforming to Water governs nobility.

Rooster hour 17:00–19:00 · Yin Fire Rooster (Ding You, 丁酉)
where year and month carry Metal qi, favourable. An Ox (丑) month with a western period, the censorate. Tiger (寅), Horse (午) and Dog (戌), noble.

Dog hour 19:00–21:00 · Yang Earth Dog (Wu Xu, 戊戌)

The eight of one substance
The day pillar is Wood Tiger (甲寅), Wood Rabbit (乙卯), Metal Monkey (庚申) or Metal Rooster (辛酉). The section lists more days whose stem and branch share an element, then names these four as the proper ones — The proper ones (为正) — so only those four are judged.
