Yang Earth Dragon (Wu Chen, 戊辰) day pillar
A Yang Earth day master, the Mountain, sitting on the Dragon.
Your day pillar is the pair of characters for the day you were born. The top one, the stem, is your day master — you. The bottom one, the branch, is what it sits on. The sixty pillars come round in turn, one a day, so about one person in sixty was born on a Wu Chen day.

Each branch holds one to three stems. The ones under your own day master are the closest things to you in the chart.
- Yang Earth (Wu, 戊), the main one — Friend (Bi Jian, 比肩). Same element, same polarity as you. A peer: someone standing where you stand, competing for the same thing and equally able to share the load.
- Yin Wood (Yi, 乙) — Direct Officer (Zheng Guan, 正官). What controls you, opposite polarity. Authority in its orderly form: office, rule, the structure you fit into.
- Yin Water (Gui, 癸) — Direct Wealth (Zheng Cai, 正财). What you control, opposite polarity. Wealth held steadily — earned, kept, accounted for.

Rat hour 23:00–01:00 · Yang Water Rat (Ren Zi, 壬子)
spring, wealth and officer strong, noble. Summer awkward. Autumn little smooth. Winter, the wealth strong, running a southwestern period, fifth or sixth grade. It dislikes a Metal Dragon (庚辰) month, self-punishment and ill; a Metal Snake (辛巳) month, the road cut and cruel punishment; a Wood Ox (乙丑) month, ruin and ill.
春，财官旺、贵。夏乖。秋少顺。冬财旺，行西南运，五六品贵。忌庚辰月，自刑凶；辛巳月，截路凶刑；乙丑月，破败凶。
Ox hour 01:00–03:00 · Yin Water Ox (Gui Chou, 癸丑)
Tiger (寅), Snake (巳), Horse (午), Goat (未) and Dog (戌) months, transforming to Fire and getting its ground; Monkey (申), Rat (子) and Dragon (辰) as a wealth frame also favourable. Where the stems and branches of year and month are pure Earth and the four vaults are complete, noble.

Tiger hour 03:00–05:00 · Yang Wood Tiger (Jia Yin, 甲寅)
Seven Killings (偏官) at the hour, Direct Resource (印绶) carrying the Killings (煞); where the pillars hold Yang Metal (庚) or Yin Metal (辛) to check it, noble. Dragon (辰), Dog (戌), Ox (丑) and Goat (未) with the self strong, also noble.
时上偏官，印绶带煞，柱有庚辛制伏者，贵。辰戌丑未，身旺亦贵。
Rabbit hour 05:00–07:00 · Yin Wood Rabbit (Yi Mao, 乙卯)
the self solitary, noble. Snake (巳) and Rabbit (卯) in year or month, the self strong and the officer strong, glory to the self and conspicuousness to the ancestors, the children filial and the wife worthy.

Dragon hour 07:00–09:00 · Yang Fire Dragon (Bing Chen, 丙辰)
it harms the father and comes out greatly; running through a month where the self is strong and a northeastern period, wealthy; a Water or Wood month running a period where the self is strong, noble.
克父大发，通身旺月，行东北运富；水木月，行身旺运，贵。
Snake hour 09:00–11:00 · Yin Fire Snake (Ding Si, 丁巳)
Snake (巳), Rooster (酉) and Ox (丑) months, the temper gallant, awe and authority weighty. Where the stems and branches of year and month show no wealth or officer, the blue cloud road is open. Pig (亥) and Dog (戌) running a southern period, fifth or sixth grade. Monkey (申) running a northern period, noble.
巳酉丑月，性格风流，威权重大。年月支干不见财官，青云得路。亥戌，行南运，五六品贵。申，行北运，贵。
Horse hour 11:00–13:00 · Yang Earth Horse (Wu Wu, 戊午)
the Flanked Prosperity (拱禄) pattern; with no Tiger (寅), Snake (巳), Yang Wood (甲) or Yin Wood (乙) character in year or month, noble. Rabbit (卯) and Monkey (申), a military office. Rooster (酉), Ox (丑) and Pig (亥) running a southern period, noble.

Goat hour 13:00–15:00 · Yin Earth Goat (Ji Wei, 己未)
spring and winter running a northern period, wealth and rank.
春冬，行北运，富贵。
Monkey hour 15:00–17:00 · Yang Metal Monkey (Geng Shen, 庚申)
the sole Eating God (食) binding the prosperity star (禄); pure Tiger (寅) in year and month — two Tiger do not fear one Monkey (申) clashing — also noble.

Rooster hour 17:00–19:00 · Yin Metal Rooster (Xin You, 辛酉)
Ox (丑) and Goat (未) in year or month with wealth showing at the stems, it governs nobility. If a Water Snake (癸巳) month, the academy and the hall of learning hold the month command, and it governs high standing in letters and the examinations; in a Tiger (寅), Monkey (申), Snake (巳) or Pig (亥) year the hour offends the Scattering (狼藉) spirit, and there is no fruit in the end.
丑未年月，干透财，主贵。若癸巳月，词馆学堂居提纲，主文学高科，寅申巳亥年，则时犯狼藉煞，晚无结果。
Dog hour 19:00–21:00 · Yang Water Dog (Ren Xu, 壬戌)
hour and day clash together — grief over wife and children; where Earth (土) is thick, greatly noble. A Rabbit (卯) month with Fire and Metal periods, middling nobility. Tiger (寅), Monkey (申), Dog (戌) and Ox (丑) running a southwestern period, extremely noble.

Pig hour 21:00–23:00 · Yin Water Pig (Gui Hai, 癸亥)
fine. Pig (亥) and Rat (子) months, the wealth-and-officer pattern; if not noble then wealthy. Tiger (寅) and Rabbit (卯) in year or month, conspicuously noble. Born in summer, a teaching post.
