Yin Fire Rabbit (Ding Mao, 丁卯) day pillar

A Yin Fire day master, the Candle, sitting on the Rabbit.

Your day pillar is the pair of characters for the day you were born. The top one, the stem, is your day master — you. The bottom one, the branch, is what it sits on. The sixty pillars come round in turn, one a day, so about one person in sixty was born on a Ding Mao day.

How the translations are made

Its sound element: Fire in the Furnace (Lu Zhong Huo,

The sixty pillars go in pairs, and each pair carries a sound element (Na Yin, 纳音) — an image, separate from the element of the stem. The classic San Ming Tong Hui (三命通会) describes each pillar by it:

Furnace smoke; likes the southeast, and autumn and winter.

What the Rabbit holds, and what it is to Yin Fire

Each branch holds one to three stems. The ones under your own day master are the closest things to you in the chart.

  • Yin Wood (Yi, 乙), the main one — Indirect Resource (Pian Yin, 偏印). What produces you, same polarity. Support of an indirect kind — the tradition treats it as nourishment that can also crowd out the Eating God (食神).

A Ding Mao day at each birth hour: San Ming Tong Hui

Two volumes of this classic go hour by hour, and at each hour say something about this exact day pillar. These are its sentences on a Ding Mao day; what it says about the other five Yin Fire days is on the Yin Fire day master page. Hours are true solar time, not clock time.

Ox hour 01:00–03:00 · Yin Metal Ox (Xin Chou,

Dragon (辰), Snake (巳) and Goat (未) in year or month, wealth and rank, wife and children late. Tiger (寅) and Rabbit (卯), the Resource (印) helping; a Dog (戌) vault with the self strong, punishment. Ox (丑) and Yin Fire (丁) with something to lean on, greatly noble.

Tiger hour 03:00–05:00 · Yang Water Tiger (Ren Yin,

noble, transforming favourably. Tiger (寅) and Rabbit (卯) in year or month running Metal and Water periods, greatly noble. Pig (亥) and Rat (子) months running a western period, noble.

Rabbit hour 05:00–07:00 · Yin Water Rabbit (Gui Mao,

born in Tiger (寅) or Rabbit (卯) months, Direct Resource (印绶) carrying the Killings (煞) — not read as ill; running an officer period, conspicuously noble.

Dragon hour 07:00–09:00 · Yang Wood Dragon (Jia Chen,

Dragon (辰), Dog (戌), Ox (丑) and Goat (未) months, solitary and harmed; the period running through, money comes out. An Ox month with a southern period, noble. A Rabbit (卯) month with Metal and Water periods, close to the throne with authority and rank, though unfavourable for speaking out.

Snake hour 09:00–11:00 · Yin Wood Snake (Yi Si,

spring the Resource (印), summer strength, autumn wealth, winter the officer — see which is taken for use; all may be called favourable. Horse (午) and Goat (未) in year or month, the writing noble and conspicuous, and running an officer and the prosperity star (禄) period, favourable.

Horse hour 11:00–13:00 · Yang Fire Horse (Bing Wu,

calamity in the midst of strength; the Rabbit (卯) character punishes and breaks the plain Yin Fire (丁). A Snake (巳) month with a northwestern period, noble; southeastern, the highest grade with authority. Tiger (寅) and Pig (亥), a military office of the second grade. If Rat (子) and Rooster (酉) are complete, greatly noble.

Goat hour 13:00–15:00 · Yin Fire Goat (Ding Wei,

it comes out of the punishment. Tiger (寅) and Rabbit (卯) months, Direct Resource (印绶), money made and generous and thick. Dragon (辰), Dog (戌), Monkey (申) and Horse (午), all favourable.

Monkey hour 15:00–17:00 · Yang Earth Monkey (Wu Shen,

spring, Hurting Officer (伤官) using the Resource (印); autumn, Hurting Officer using wealth — both favourable. Summer, Friend (比肩); winter, Hurting Officer seeing the officer — ordinary. The four seasonal months, favourable.

Rooster hour 17:00–19:00 · Yin Earth Rooster (Ji You, 己酉)

hour and day clash together — grief over wife and children; carrying Fire qi, favourable. It dislikes the Wood Rabbit (乙卯) character. Where year and month hold Pig (亥) and Goat (未), or Snake (巳) and Ox (丑), one character binding two is not read as a clash.

Dog hour 19:00–21:00 · Yang Metal Dog (Geng Xu,

born with Pig (亥) or Goat (未) in year or month, the triad gathering as the Resource (印), noble. A Rat (子) month, Killings (煞) and Resource, favourable. An Established Prosperity (建禄) in year or month, a monk or priest, and it governs nobility. Where the pillars have no rescue and a strong Yin Water (癸) is seen, many suffer eye complaints; a Rooster (酉) month, not noble. Pure Rooster and Dog (戌) in year and month with Yin Earth (己) and Yang Wood (甲) showing at the stems, noble, with ill carried within it.

Pig hour 21:00–23:00 · Yin Metal Pig (Xin Hai,

at the hour, wealth, officer and Resource (印) as three marvels; getting the Resource to help and the wealth to produce in year and month besides, all govern great nobility. Pure Rat (子) running Wood and Fire periods, office to the sixth grade. Snake (巳), Rooster (酉) and Ox (丑) months, the Yin Metal (辛) wealth gets its frame and then has something strong to lean on — wealth and rank both complete.
