Yin Fire (Ding, 丁) day master: The Candle

Fire in the 1st month: Yang Wood (甲) holds power, which is to say the mother is strong. Nothing but Yang Metal (庚) splits the Yang Wood, and without that the Yin Fire (丁) cannot be lit — so Yang Metal is used for want of better. A run of Yang Wood with no Yang Metal to check it means poverty if not an early death.

正月丁火，甲木當權，乃為母旺，非庚不能劈甲，何以引丁，姑用庚金。

Fire in the 2nd month: damp Yin Wood (乙) injures the Yin Fire (丁). Yang Metal (庚) first, Yang Wood (甲) after — nothing else clears the Yin Wood, and nothing but Yang Wood lights the Yin Fire. Both showing means the examinations for certain; Yang Metal showing with Yang Wood hidden still brings advancement, and Yang Wood showing with Yang Metal hidden a name by an irregular road.

二月丁火，濕乙傷丁，先庚後甲，非不能去乙，非甲不能引丁。庚甲兩透，科甲定然，庚透甲藏，亦有生貢，甲透庚藏，異路功名。

Fire in the 3rd month: Yang Earth (戊) holds the season and drains the Yin Fire (丁). Use Yang Wood (甲) first to light the Yin Fire and check the Earth, then look to Yang Metal (庚). Both showing means the examinations; one showing and one hidden is still not a commoner.

三月丁火，戊土司令，洩弱丁氣，先用甲木引丁制土，次看庚金，庚甲兩透，定主科甲，或一藏一透，終非白丁。

Fire in the 4th month rides its season. Even taking Yang Wood (甲) to light the Yin Fire (丁), Yang Metal (庚) must be used to split and cut it, and only then is there the brightness of Wood and Fire. With much Yang Wood, take Yang Metal first.

四月丁火乘旺，雖取甲引丁，必用庚劈甲，伐甲、方雲木火通明，甲多、又取庚為先。

Fire in the 5th month sits in its own seat, and Yang Wood (甲) should not be used loosely.

五月丁火，時歸建祿，不宜亂用甲木。

Fire in the 6th month: yin and yielding and on its way out, and with the cold that starts in the dog days the Yin Fire (丁) is weak indeed. Take Yang Wood (甲) in particular, with Yang Water (壬) next.

六月丁火，陰柔退氣，但值三伏生寒，丁弱極矣，專取甲木，壬水次之。

Fire in the 7th month is receding and soft. Use Yang Wood (甲) in particular. Metal may ride the season, but there is no reason for it to hurt the Yin Fire (丁); still take Yang Metal (庚) to split the Yang Wood as the thing that carries the flame, or borrow Yang Fire (丙) to warm the Metal and dry the Yang Wood — with no fear that Yang Fire steals the Yin Fire's light. Two Yang Fire flanking a Yin Fire are to be avoided in the summer months, though not in the rest.

七月丁火，退氣柔弱，端用甲木，金雖乘旺司權，無傷丁之理，仍取庚劈甲，為引火之物，或借丙暖金曬甲，不慮丙奪丁光，凡兩丙夾丁者，夏月忌之，餘月不忌，但此格少年困苦刑克中年富貴，必要地支見水制丙，方妙。

It dislikes a Water Snake (癸巳) month, breaking the ancestors and ill; an Earth Goat (己未) month, punishment and injury; a Wood Monkey (甲申) month, a death of the branded face and spilt blood. Fire in conception and Metal (金) cut off, there are gains and losses; with control, punishment, clash and breaking, within it writing and blessing are hard to keep whole. Producing and rescuing each other, a noble hand lifts him — this destiny is hard first and easy after.

For a Yin Fire day at the Metal Ox hour: Ox (丑) is the wealth vault, Yin Metal (辛) the wife and wealth, and Yin Earth (己) the Eating God (食神). Ox is strong as a Metal frame and the hidden Yin Earth has its position, while Yin Fire has no qi. If it loses the season of heaven and has nothing to lean on, it comes out through the wife; with something to lean on and rescue it, wealth and Eating God (食) are ample. Fire Ox (丁丑) day at the Metal Ox hour: Monkey (申) and Rooster (酉) months, the wealth pattern, wealth strong producing the officer, noble. Monkey, Rooster and Dog, the wealth strong and following it, best of all. Pig (亥) and Rat, the officer strong, also favourable. Fire Pig (丁亥) day at the Metal Ox hour: spring, Direct Resource (印绶), favourable; born in autumn with Fire qi also favourable; summer, too strong, ill; winter, officer and Killings (煞) strong, favourable. Goat and Dog months clashing open the Ox vault, wealthy. Verse: Metal Ox meeting Yin Fire is a treasure vault — with no key in the pillars it is hard to speak of wealth; when punishment, clash and the period arrive he meets a high person, and rising in another country his name and repute are made. Verse: a Yin Fire day meeting Metal Ox at the hour — the Indirect Wealth (偏财) vault is glad of punishment and clash. If it still does not show, there is an empty name. Wife and children should be congratulated together; parents and the rank of siblings are hard to keep in accord. The household gate is changed and made new; money comes and blessing comes and the middle rising is seen. This must be a destiny of glory.

For a Yin Fire day at the Water Tiger hour: the self goes and follows the officer. Yin Fire and Yang Water (壬) transform to Wood, and upon Tiger (寅) it is hale and strong. If it is a month of the Water frame, greatly noble; carrying a Wood month, also noble. As with a Fire Goat (丁未) month running an eastern period, good. Fire Ox (丁丑) day at the Water Tiger hour: transforming, noble. Born in a winter month, the officer strong, noble. Spring, Direct Resource (印绶), settled; summer favourable; autumn middling, and running an eastern period is good. Fire Rabbit (丁卯) day at the Water Tiger hour: noble, transforming favourably. For a Yin Fire day at the Water Rabbit hour: the self declining and the ghost strong. Yin Fire takes Yin Water (癸) as its ghost and Yin Wood (乙) as its Overturned Meal (倒食); upon Rabbit (卯) the Yin Water is produced and the Yin Wood strong. If there is something to lean on and rescue it, and a month where the self is strong, the ghost turns into the officer, favourable; and where the pillars have nothing, a period that runs through is also favourable. The reverse of this is poor and low, blindness and blood complaints, calamity to the wife and few children. Fire Ox (丁丑) day at the Water Rabbit hour: Dragon (辰), Dog (戌), Ox (丑) and Goat (未) months, held in check to the mean, noble. A Horse (午) month with strong stems, noble. Monkey (申) and Ox, the censorate. Fire Rabbit (丁卯) day at the Water Rabbit hour: born in Tiger (寅) or Rabbit months, Direct Resource (印绶) carrying the Killings (煞) — not read as ill; running an officer period, conspicuously noble. Fire Snake (丁巳) day at the Water Rabbit hour: born in an Ox month with a northern period, where Earth (土) is thick, favourable; on ground where Water is fine, second or third grade. Monkey and Rooster (酉), using wealth, also favourable. Fire Goat (丁未) day at the Water Rabbit hour: the Seven Killings (偏官) producing the Resource (印). Spring favourable, summer middling, autumn wealthy, winter poor. Fire Rooster (丁酉) day at the Water Rabbit hour: day and hour both sit on nobility — best of all. Spring and summer, the self strong, the ghost turns into the officer; autumn and winter, the self declining, diligence and hardship. Snake (巳) and Dog months, noble. Pure Horse and Ox in year and month with Yang Metal (庚) and Yin Earth (己) showing at the stems, pure and noble. Fire Pig (丁亥) day at the Water Rabbit hour: a Rabbit month, Direct Resource, the nobility of one who attends the throne; Tiger and Horse, a capital office of the fifth or sixth grade. Verse: a Fire Ox day meeting a Water Rabbit birth — seeking name and seeking profit is merely middling; the self declining, cleverness turns to clumsiness instead, and to get his will he must run through and meet a noble. Verse: a Yin Fire day with Water Rabbit at the hour — the self declining with nothing to lean on, ordinary. Within the gate the ghost and the thief waste the money and grain; keeping to the ancestors, he must guard against it being broken and swept away. Parents and the rank of siblings give little to lean on; wife and children do not escape leaving the home village. When the period brings the self strong the Killings comes down at last — one may allow him profit, name, glory and ease.

Yang Wood (甲) is the Resource and Yang Water (壬) the officer; within Dragon (辰) the Yang Wood as Direct Resource produces the self and the officer star binds into a frame. If it carries the month qi and has something to lean on, noble; otherwise ordinary. Born in spring it is glad of a northern period; born in winter, glad of a southern period — favourable. Fire Ox (丁丑) day at the Wood Dragon hour: favourable. Pig (亥) and Rat (子) months, wealth and rank. A Monkey (申) month with an eastern period; a Horse (午) month with Metal and Water periods — both noble. Pure Tiger (寅), the censorate at the highest grade. Fire Rabbit (丁卯) day at the Wood Dragon hour: Dragon, Dog (戌), Ox (丑) and Goat (未) months, solitary and harmed; the period running through, money comes out. An Ox month with a southern period, noble. Not meeting Ox or Dragon there is no key; the vault shut, and wealth can be stored away. Binding and leaning on the wife, he settles with her; the six relations and flesh and blood thin out. In later years blessing comes and the gate is changed — this destiny is sweet after and bitter first.

A Yin Fire (丁) day born at the Metal Pig (辛亥) hour: wealth and officer both fine, the Resource (印) at its long life; where the month qi runs through it is nobility of the highest, and where the month does not run through, name and profit are light. Yin Fire uses Yang Water (壬) as officer, Yin Metal (辛) as wealth and Yang Wood (甲) as Resource; upon Pig (亥) there is an open Yin Metal as wealth and a hidden Yang Water as officer, producing the Yang Wood as Resource. If it carries Fire qi with something to lodge in, greatly noble, with a name whole and fine; not carrying it, name and profit are awkward and poor. Fire Ox (丁丑) day at the Metal Pig hour: autumn, the wealth strong; summer, the self strong; spring, the Resource strong — conspicuously noble. Winter, officer and Killings (煞) too heavy, and the self weak may be unable to bear the blessing. Holding office as a graduate, hanging up the court robe, he must be a general or minister from a cold gate. It certainly governs a worthy wife and filial children, dignity and authority beyond measure. Suddenly raised to the terrace ministries and the capital halls — for wealth and officer are produced and strong.
