Morris Chang’s BaZi chart 张忠谋

Founder of TSMC · born 10 July 1931, Ningbo, Zhejiang, China · date source: Wikipedia

No birth time has been published. The date fixes three of the four pillars; the fourth is one of twelve. Below, everything the date settles is computed, and everything that turns on the hour is cast all twelve ways — without picking one on anyone’s behalf.

one of twelve — see below

Each pillar is two characters: a stem on top (an element, yin or yang) and a branch below (one of the twelve zodiac animals). The day stem is the day master — the person. The label above each other stem is its ten god (Shi Shen, 十神): what that element is to the day master.

Each animal also hides stems of its own, strongest first: the Goat hides Yin Earth (己, Hurting Officer), Yin Fire (丁, Rob Wealth), Yin Wood (乙, Direct Resource); the Goat hides Yin Earth (己, Hurting Officer), Yin Fire (丁, Rob Wealth), Yin Wood (乙, Direct Resource); the Tiger hides Yang Wood (甲, Indirect Resource), Yang Fire (丙, Friend), Yang Earth (戊, Eating God).

Direct Wealth (Zheng Cai, 正财)
What you control, opposite polarity. Wealth held steadily — earned, kept, accounted for.
Hurting Officer (Shang Guan, 伤官)
What you produce, opposite polarity. Output with an edge on it. The name means it injures the Direct Officer (正官), which is why the tradition reads it as talent that does not sit well with authority.
Rob Wealth (Jie Cai, 劫财)
Same element, opposite polarity. A peer who takes rather than shares — the tradition reads it as what draws on your resources through people close to you.
Direct Resource (Zheng Yin, 正印)
What produces you, opposite polarity. Straightforward support: what teaches, shelters and backs you.
Indirect Resource (Pian Yin, 偏印)
What produces you, same polarity. Support of an indirect kind — the tradition treats it as nourishment that can also crowd out the Eating God (食神).
Friend (Bi Jian, 比肩)
Same element, same polarity as you. A peer: someone standing where you stand, competing for the same thing and equally able to share the load.
Eating God (Shi Shen, 食神)
What you produce, same polarity. Output that comes easily: making, feeding, expressing, without strain.

Day master

丙 The Sun Yang Fire (Bing)

What the classic Di Tian Sui (滴天髓) says of this stem — the original, then in English

丙火猛烈,欺霜侮雪。能煅庚金,逢辛反怯。土众成慈。水猖显节,虎马犬乡,甲来成灭。

Yang Fire (丙) is fierce and violent, bullying frost and insulting snow. It can smelt Yang Metal (庚), yet meeting Yin Metal (辛) it turns timid. With Earth in numbers it becomes kind; with Water rampant it shows its constancy. In the country of tiger, horse and dog, let Yang Wood (甲) come and it is destroyed.

Born in a Goat month (Wei, 未), when Earth rules the season. In that season Yang Fire is at rest (Xiu, 休): it produced the season and its work is done. (One of five seasonal states, Wang Xiang Xiu Qiu Si, 旺相休囚死, after the San Ming Tong Hui, 三命通會, book 2.)

Elements in the six known characters

木 Wood × 2 火 Fire × 1 土 Earth × 2 金 Metal × 1 水 Water × 0

None of the six is Water. The hour pillar’s two characters may supply it or may not — that depends on the hour. Hidden stems are not counted here.

All twelve hours, cast one by one

In all twelve hours the Yang Fire day master reads strong. Whatever the hour, the support-and-restrain method favours Earth, Metal, Water — the date alone settles it.

Each row is exactly what the full calculator would say for a birth in that hour. Strength comes from three tests: in season (De Ling, 得令) — born in the season of the day master’s own element; rooted (De Di, 得地) — the same element hidden in a branch; backed (De Shi, 得势) — as much support around it as drain. Two of three reads strong. The favoured elements come from support and restrain (Fu Yi, 扶抑): a strong day master wants draining, a weak one wants support. There are three other methods for the useful element — climate (Tiao Hou, 调候), bridging (Tong Guan, 通關) and disease and cure (Bing Yao, 病藥) — each from its own text; see the useful god page. Hours are solar time at the birthplace, so a clock time needs correcting first; and a birth after 23:00 falls in the late Rat hour, where the two schools disagree about whether the day has turned.

Morris Chang’s bone weight (Cheng Gu, 称骨)

Lunar date: day 25 of the 5th month, Metal Goat year (辛未年五月廿五). Its weights: year 0.8 liang, month 0.5 liang, day 1.5 liang — 2.8 liang before the hour. Over the twelve hours that makes 3.4 liang to 4.4 liang.

Rat (子) 4.4 liang Ox (丑) 3.4 liang Tiger (寅) 3.5 liang Rabbit (卯) 3.8 liang Dragon (辰) 3.7 liang Snake (巳) 4.4 liang Horse (午) 3.8 liang Goat (未) 3.6 liang Monkey (申) 3.6 liang Rooster (酉) 3.7 liang Dog (戌) 3.4 liang Pig (亥) 3.4 liang

Bone weighing is a folk almanac sum over the calendar positions of the year, month, day and hour — not the elements, and not the chart above. How heavy is heavy? The tables and the spread ›

And yours?

You have your own birth time, so your chart needs no table of twelve — all four pillars, corrected to true solar time with the timezone actually in force where and when you were born.

About this page

This page computes; it does not interpret. The birth date is public and its source is linked; the birth time is not, so the hour pillar and everything that depends on it are set out all twelve ways.

Nothing here claims that anyone is who they are because of a chart, and nothing here forecasts years, health or lifespan for anyone living.
