Yang Wood (Jia, 甲) day master: The Great Tree

Wood in the 1st month: early spring, the cold not yet gone. Meeting Yang Fire (丙) and Yin Water (癸) together gives both wealth and rank; Yin Water hidden in a branch with Yang Fire showing in the stems is called "cold wood turned to the sun", and is read as great wealth and rank.

正月甲木，初春尚有餘寒，得丙癸逢，富貴雙全。癸藏丙透，名寒木向陽，主大富貴。

Wood in the 1st and 2nd months does not take the Following Wealth (從才), Following Killings (從殺) or Following Transformation (從化) patterns. A run of Yang Metal (庚) and Yin Metal (辛) means a life of hard labour, harm to children and to the wife; and if the branches also form a Metal frame, poverty if not an early death.

正二月甲木，素無取從才從殺從化之理。或一派庚辛，主一生勞苦，克子刑妻，再支會金局，非貧即夭。

Wood in the 3rd month: the Wood force is spent. Take Yang Metal (庚) first, then Yang Water (壬).

三月甲木，木氣相竭。先取庚金，次用壬水。

Wood in the 4th month is on its way out and Yang Fire (丙) holds power. Yin Water (癸) first, then Yin Fire (丁).

四月甲木退氣，丙火司權，先癸後丁。

Wood in the 5th and 6th months is hollow and scorched, and both are read the same way. In the 5th, Yin Water (癸) first and Yin Fire (丁) after, with Yang Metal (庚) next.

五六月甲木，木性虛焦，一理共推。五月先癸後丁庚金次之。

Wood in the 7th month: Yin Fire (丁) is first in honour and Yang Metal (庚) next — Yang Metal cannot be spared. Fire separated from Metal by Water cannot melt it, so for Yin Fire to melt Metal it must be fed by Yang Wood (甲), and only then is there a proper furnace.

七月甲木，丁火為尊，庚金次之，庚金不可少。火隔水不能熔金，故丁火熔金，必賴甲木引助，方成洪爐。

Wood in the 8th month: Wood is penned in and Metal is at its height. Yin Fire (丁) first, then Yang Fire (丙), and Yang Metal (庚) after those.

八月甲木，木囚金旺。丁火為先，次用丙火，庚金再次。

Wood in the 9th month is withering, and wants Yin Fire (丁) above all, with Yang Water (壬) or Yin Water (癸) to feed it. Yin Fire, Yang Water and Yin Water showing, and Yang Earth (戊) or Yin Earth (己) showing too, is a balanced chart and good for a pass in the examinations; with Yang Metal (庚) well placed as well, the examinations are certain.

九月甲木，木星凋零，獨愛丁火，壬癸滋扶，丁壬癸透，戊己亦透，此命配得中和，可許一榜。庚金得所，科甲定然。

Wood in the 10th month wants Yang Metal (庚) and Yin Fire (丁), with Yang Fire (丙) next. Avoid Yang Water (壬) flooding the self; Yang Earth (戊) is needed to hold it back.

十月甲木，庚丁為要，丙火次之。忌壬水泛身，須戊土制之。

Wood in the 11th month is cold by nature. Yin Fire (丁) first, Yang Metal (庚) after, with Yang Fire (丙) in support. Yin Water (癸) holds power here, and is a sickness to both Fire and Metal.

十一月甲木，木性生寒，丁先庚後，丙火佐之。癸水司權，為火金之病。

Wood in the 12th month: the season is frozen and the Wood is cold through, with nothing coming to life. Use Yang Metal (庚) to split the Yang Wood (甲) first, which is what lets Yin Fire (丁) catch — only then is there the brightness of Wood and Fire together, so Yin Fire comes second. Yang Metal and Yin Fire both showing means the examinations and an appointment.

十二月甲木，天寒氣凍，木性極寒，無生發之象，先用庚劈甲，方引丁火始得木火有通明之象，故丁次之。

A Yang Wood (甲) day born at the Wood Rat (甲子) hour: the Direct Resource (印绶) within decay, with the officer arriving to produce it. Where the month carries Wood qi it is out of the ordinary; the reverse of that and the name and profit are empty. For a Yang Wood day at the Wood Rat hour: Yang Wood decays at Rat (子), but Yin Water (癸) is hidden there as the living Direct Resource, and the officer produces that Resource (印). If Yin Earth (己) breaks the Resource and the month qi runs through, noble. Otherwise it flowers without fruiting. Wood Rat day at the Wood Rat hour makes the Rat calling the Snake from afar (子遥巳) pattern: with no Yang Metal (庚), Yin Metal (辛), Monkey (申) or Rooster (酉) in the year or month, and Ox (丑) binding or Horse (午) clashing, it leaves the ancestors and stands on its own — noble. If year and month are both Tiger (寅), running a Monkey or Rooster period brings great wealth and then loses it. With Rat, Pig (亥), Rabbit (卯) or Goat (未) in the year or month and a western period, noble. A Wood Dragon (甲辰) month is also noble. A Rooster month is read simply as Direct Officer (正官) and is greatly noble. Snake (巳), Horse and Dog (戌) months are ordinary. In a Horse month Yang Wood dies and Rat clashes, which is worse still. Wood Rabbit (乙卯) and Wood Snake (乙巳) months govern death by law. (All of the above take the day and hour as the ruler, with the year and month of the person attached to them; where the offices named do not match, those are ranks of a former age. The same below.) Wood Tiger (甲寅) day at the Wood Rat hour holds Ox between them, and the Yin Metal within it — noble. With no Yang Metal, Yin Metal, Monkey, Rooster, Ox or Goat in year or month, greatly noble. Add a Wood Tiger month and it is solitary and harmed; only a monk or a priest may carry it. With Pig or Rat in year or month, rank of the fourth grade. A Horse month running a northeastern period is also noble. In Rooster, Ox or Snake months the officer and the Killings (煞) stand openly, and where the pillars hold a Resource as well, all are noble. With Rabbit or Goat the self is too strong and punishment or injury is not escaped. A Wood Snake month takes punishment. A Fire Pig (丁亥) month dies badly at the height of its strength. Wood Dragon day at the Wood Rat hour: where the year and month are Water positions, Water floods and the Wood floats — it governs moving the root and changing the leaves. In a Monkey month the Killings star meets the Resource and both are noble. In a Rat month, running Water and Wood periods, also noble. A Rooster month is Direct Officer and greatly noble. Tiger, Horse and Dog months are all favourable. A Wood Rabbit month breaks under punishment. A Water Snake (癸巳) month dies between Water and Fire. A Water Pig (癸亥) month dies ill. Wood Horse (甲午) day at the Wood Rat hour: hour and day clash together — grief over wife and children; where the month carries Wood qi, conspicuously noble. Pure Rat and Horse in year and month, or Pig, Goat or Rooster months, all noble. Wood Monkey (甲申) day at the Wood Rat hour: Yang Wood in its conception meets the Resource, and the Resource transforms the Killings — noble. Mandarin ducks doubled over: children are hard to come by. Running a southeastern period, it holds office between the civil and the military. Pig, Rabbit, Goat, Dragon (辰), Ox and Monkey months are all noble. A Wood Rabbit month dies young. A Fire Snake (丁巳) month dies without a whole body. Wood Dog (甲戌) day at the Wood Rat hour holds Pig, the gate of heaven, and gathers at the emperor's palace — it is Yang Wood's ground of long life and must not be read as a corner apart. Where year and month carry the Metal qi of Monkey, Snake, Rooster or Ox, greatly noble. An Earth Tiger (戊寅) year or month governs deafness or dumbness, or injury by wolf and tiger; seeing Yang Water (壬) it is favourable. A Wood Rabbit month dies by punishment; a Wood Pig (乙亥) month is killed by robbers. (The likes and dislikes of year and month for these six days are to be read flexibly. The same below.) Verse: Wood Rat meeting Wood Rat in a row — reckon it an immortal breaking the cassia in the toad palace; but with Ox binding and a clash breaking the officer-ghost (官鬼), the name stumbles and never comes whole. Verse: a Wood Rat hour meeting Wood Rat, and within it the Direct Resource answering. If Metal Monkey (庚申) and Metal Rooster (辛酉) come, with Ox and Goat in year and month besides, the hidden nobility is conspicuous in the extreme, while Snake and Horse clashing and breaking make it middling. If truly there is no punishment, no injury, no void and no clash, it certainly governs a person set above the crowd.

A Yang Wood (甲) day born at the Wood Ox (乙丑) hour: Rob Wealth (劫财) and the Yang Blade (羊刃) are not to be had; where the pillars meet Fire carrying Yin Metal (辛), held in check and at peace, the nobility also lasts. For a Yang Wood day at the Wood Ox hour: Yin Metal is the officer and Yin Earth (己) the wealth. The Yin Earth hidden in Ox (丑) is robbed away by the open Yin Wood (乙). Wood Ox is the Metal Spirit (金神): if year, day and hour combine into a Fire frame and it is held in check, the person is of pure and harmonious character, and noble. Without Fire, fierce. Combining into a Water frame, cruel and damaging to the household. Wood Rat (甲子) day at the Wood Ox hour: strung in a row and bound — the wife is worthy and the children noble. Born in a spring month the self is strong and money is scattered. In summer Yang Wood declines, the Metal Spirit is held in check, noble. Born in autumn, the nobility of one who attends the throne. An Ox month is best; Pig (亥) and Rat (子) bring much ill. Wood Tiger (甲寅) day at the Wood Ox hour: poor in spring, noble in autumn, wealthy in winter; in summer Fire holds the Metal Spirit in check — favourable. Wood Dragon (甲辰) day at the Wood Ox hour: rich and thick with property. Where year and month carry Fire qi, noble. Wood Horse (甲午) day at the Wood Ox hour: The Metal Spirit enters a Fire frame — the self weak, poor and short-lived. Tiger (寅) and Dog (戌) gathering as Fire is one Wood meeting Fire positions over and over, which is unfavourable. With Tiger or Dog alone, or in Monkey (申), Rooster (酉) or Pig months, rank of the fourth or fifth grade. Wood Monkey (甲申) day at the Wood Ox hour: carrying illness, ordinary. Born in a Rat month with a southern period, noble. Born in autumn it transforms the Killings (煞), and with a Direct Resource (印绶) showing at the stems, more noble still. Wood Dog (甲戌) day at the Wood Ox hour: fields stretching one into the next, the granaries rotting with grain — but an earlier punishment is not escaped. With Tiger in year or month, father and son are both conspicuous. In a Rat month with a western period, gold and purple. Verse: Rob Wealth and the Yang Blade are unwanted at the hour, and within the palace wealth and officer are locked behind a door; where Dragon (辰) and Goat (未) meet it is greatly favourable, and without them one passes the days as one pleases. Verse: a Yang Wood day meeting Wood Ox at the hour — gold and jade stored in the vault. The Nobleman (天乙) noble is injured by Rob Wealth, the bright moon veiled by cloud. A Fire frame and a southern period are noble; the Metal Spirit held in check answers to it. Wood withered and Water in flood is merely ordinary — turning from the ancestors, leaving home, and prospering late.

For a Yang Wood day at the Fire Tiger hour: Yang Wood is hale and strong upon Tiger (寅), Yang Fire (丙) is the Eating God, and the star of long life has its ground. With no Yang Water in the pillars to seize it and no Yin Water (癸) to control it, and the month carrying Fire or Wood qi, noble. It dislikes seeing the officer star, and a Monkey (申) clashing the prosperity star. Wood Rat (甲子) day at the Fire Tiger hour: the day's prosperity star residing at the hour — the blue cloud road is open. With no Yang Metal (庚) or Yin Metal (辛) in year or month, noble; carrying Wood and Fire qi, extremely noble. A Horse (午) month running a northeastern period gives rank of the fifth or sixth grade. A Monkey month is the prosperity star returning and meeting the Killings (煞), and governs great authority; a Water frame is ordinary. Where year and month match the day and hour, greatly noble. Wood Tiger (甲寅) day at the Fire Tiger hour: with no Snake (巳), Rooster (酉), Yin Metal or Ox (丑) in year or month it is the Returning Prosperity (归禄) pattern, reaching the first or second grade. Pure Wood and Fire carrying Earth, wealth and rank both complete, an office among the six ministers. Fire Rat (丙子), Pig (亥), Goat (未) and Rabbit (卯) months give the fourth or fifth grade; running a southwestern period is best. There are also noble ones in Rooster and Ox months — look to what shows at the stems and what the year is. Wood Dragon (甲辰) day at the Fire Tiger hour: dragon and tiger hold the gate, and the dragon sings while the tiger roars — noble, or else close to the noble all one's life; the source of money is sometimes had and sometimes lost, name and profit now finished and now unfinished. With Goat or Tiger in year or month, office among the six ministers; a Dog (戌) month, the censorate; a Rooster month, third grade; Rat (子), Pig or Ox months, fourth or fifth grade, and running a western period, greatly noble; Rabbit and Snake in year or month are ordinary. Wood Horse (甲午) day at the Fire Tiger hour: the self sits on ground of cutting-off — ordinary. Where a Water month runs through and the Wood is nourished, favourable; a Fire month shortens life, though a companion at the stems does no harm. Wood Monkey (甲申) day at the Fire Tiger hour: hour and day clash together — grief over wife and children. Where year and month match, greatly noble; Snake and Pig, second or third grade; Dragon (辰) and Rat in year or month gather Water and turn the Killings into a Resource (印), favourable; a Goat month is the wealth storehouse, also favourable. Wood Dog (甲戌) day at the Fire Tiger hour: with Earth in year or month, wealthy; with Metal, reversals. If there is Metal, it must be born in a Pig or Rat Resource month to be noble; in other months not. Verse: Yang Wood and Yang Fire invited together into the tiger's country — the star of blessing sits on the prosperity star and the writing is conspicuous; when the period comes with no harm in the four pillars, sooner or later promoted to the censorate. Verse: a Yang Wood day meeting Yang Fire at the Tiger hour — learning, blessing and the prosperity star ranked together. Meeting Dragon or Dog, two or three wives; the prosperity star lord attends the origin, wealth and rank. Yin Fire (丁), Horse, Yang Metal and Monkey lessen the blessing; better no officer to entangle it. Born to be conspicuous with someone to recommend him — this destiny is hard first and easy after.

A Yang Wood (甲) day born at the Fire Rabbit (丁卯) hour: Hurting Officer (伤官) and the Yang Blade (羊刃) truly are a vexation; even with the month qi to support it, the person's nature is not escaped from being bad. For a Yang Wood day at the Fire Rabbit hour: Hurting Officer with the Yang Blade. Yang Wood uses Yin Metal (辛) as its officer and Yin Fire (丁) injures it; it uses Snake (巳) as wealth and the Yin Wood (乙) within Rabbit (卯) robs it — the person is fierce and cruel. If Yin Metal shows at the stems, Hurting Officer sees the officer and punishment and harm come a hundredfold; the periods are perilous and the end is not a good one. If the pillars hold a Killings (煞) binding the blade, running wealth, officer and Direct Resource (印绶), greatly noble. Wood Rat (甲子) day at the Fire Rabbit hour: grasping and mean, advancing and retreating in its dealings, punishment or injury to wife and children not escaped, or death in another country. Born in Dragon (辰), Dog (戌), Ox (丑) or Goat (未) months, noble. A Rabbit month is ill; if the pillars hold an officer or Killings to check it, favourable. Wood Tiger (甲寅) day at the Fire Rabbit hour: with Wood and Fire in balance in year and month it is an image of penetrating brightness, noble. The month command sitting on Ox or Goat, noble. In a Wood Pig (乙亥) month the writing crowns the age and office reaches the third grade; with Metal and Water complete at stems and branches, officer and Resource (印) both conspicuous and noble. Wood Dragon (甲辰) day at the Fire Rabbit hour: money fills the eye, the living runs to surplus, the wife worthy and the children filial — read as a high destiny. Born in spring, too strong and unchecked, poor, low and crippled. Ox and Rooster (酉) months, noble. Wood Horse (甲午) day at the Fire Rabbit hour: the self sits on ground of cutting-off — punishment and ill. If born in autumn or winter, short-lived. Spring and summer, wealth and rank. A Wood Horse month, greatly noble, and the period should be northeastern. Wood Monkey (甲申) day at the Fire Rabbit hour: governs a military office, the censorate, authority and rank. A Rooster month with Fire and Wood periods, middling nobility. Tiger (寅) or Horse (午) in year or month, greatly noble. Wood Dog (甲戌) day at the Fire Rabbit hour: meeting a Pig (亥) month, talent and learning, conspicuously noble. The Yang Blade is the worst of it: the making of it must have something to check or bind it before it is favourable. Where the self is weak there is no ill; if year and month are pure Killings and the Yang Wood is born in autumn, it governs an early death. Verse: the six days of the Yang Wood run meeting Fire Rabbit — layer upon layer, fearing clash and punishment; the period running against the prosperity star (禄) with no officer and no rank, to old age poring over the classics and never given a name. Verse: a Yang Wood day with Fire Rabbit at the hour — Hurting Officer and the Yang Blade follow one another. Yang Wood meeting Yin Fire turns to ash: parents and brothers are hard to lean on. The ancestral fields and money gather and scatter, and wife and children are always short of something. When the period runs officer and Killings it becomes remarkable; the temper is now angry, now glad.

A Yang Wood (甲) day born at the Earth Dragon (戊辰) hour: the heavenly wealth sits on its storehouse and gathers to nourish the self; a great merchant with fields and gardens in plenty, and where the month carries Yin Metal (辛), name and profit are made.
