Yin Wood (Yi, 乙) day master: The Vine

Wood in the 1st month must use Yang Fire (丙): the cold is not yet out of the air, and nothing but Yang Fire warms it. Even where there is Yin Water (癸), it risks holding the cold in place — so Yang Fire first and Yin Water second. Both showing means the examinations; Yang Fire without Yin Water still means a household that rises.

正月乙木，必須用丙，因天氣尤有餘寒，非丙不暖，雖有癸水，恐凝寒氣，故以丙火為先，癸水次之。

Wood in the 2nd month: the warm force is rising and the Wood is no longer cold. Yang Fire (丙) is the ruler and Yin Water (癸) the minister. Both showing, with no Yang Metal (庚), means great wealth and rank. Yang Metal showing in the stems without Dragon (辰) in the branches cannot turn to Metal; Yin Water showing to nourish the Wood is still honourable. A Water store in the branches makes the transformation false, and an ordinary person.

二月乙木，陽氣漸升，木不寒矣，以丙為君，癸為臣，丙癸兩透，不透庚金，大富大貴。

Wood in the 3rd month: the warm force burns harder. Yin Water (癸) first, then Yang Fire (丙).

三月乙木，陽氣愈熾，先癸後丙。

Wood in the 4th month has Yang Fire (丙) of its own, so take Yin Water (癸) as the one to honour. It uses Yin Water in particular, with Yang Fire in measured amounts; and though Yang Metal (庚) or Yin Metal (辛) may assist Yin Water, it is Yin Metal showing that keeps it clean.

四月乙木，自有丙火，端取癸水為尊。四月乙木專用癸水，丙火酌用，雖以庚辛佐癸，須辛透為清。

Wood in the 5th month: Yin Fire (丁) holds power and the crops are parched. The first half of the month belongs to yang, and Yin Water (癸) is still what is used.

五月乙木，丁火司權，禾稼俱旱。上半月屬陽，仍用癸水。

Wood in the 6th month is cold in itself; with much Metal and Water in the chart, Yang Fire (丙) is first in honour. If the branches form a Water frame, the Wood takes no harm.

六月乙木，木性且寒，柱多金水，丙火為尊。支成水局，乙得無傷。

Wood in the 7th month: Yang Metal (庚) rides the season. Yang Metal may be well disposed towards its sister Yin Wood (乙), but a Yin Wood in the stems cannot easily join with Metal in the branches. With much Yang Metal in the chart, Yin Wood can hardly bear the weight.

七月乙木，庚金乘令，庚雖輸情於乙妹，怎奈干乙難合支金。柱見庚多，乙難受載。

Wood in the 8th month: the orchid and the crop are both past. Read Yin Wood (乙) here as the cassia in flower.

八月乙木，芝蘭禾稼均退。以丹桂為乙木。

Wood in the 9th month: the root dries and the leaf falls, and it depends on Yin Water (癸) to feed it. With a Wood Monkey (甲申) hour it is called "the vine that clings to Yang Wood (甲)", and will do in autumn or in winter.

九月乙木，根枯葉落，必賴癸水滋養。如見甲申時，名為藤蘿系甲，可秋可冬。

Wood in the 10th month takes no force from the season, and Yang Water (壬) commands. Take Yang Fire (丙) as the useful element (用神), with Yang Earth (戊) next. Both showing means the examinations.

十月乙木，木不受氣，而壬水司令，取丙為用，戊土次之。丙戊兩透，科甲定然。

Wood in the 11th month: the plant is frozen, and one yang returns. Yang Fire (丙) is welcome to thaw it, and the plant turns to the sun. Yin Water (癸) is not wanted here — it freezes the plant — so Yang Fire in particular. A point or two of Yang Fire showing in the stems, with no Yin Water to check it, is good for the examinations.

十一月乙木，花木寒凍，一陽來複，喜用丙火解凍，則花木有向陽之意，不宜用癸以凍花木，故端用丙火。

A Yin Wood (乙) day born at the Fire Rat (丙子) hour: Hurting Officer (伤官) sits on nobility and the blessing is not whole; where the pillars show no officer, punishment or breaking, this is a life bound to nobility and the prosperity star (禄). For a Yin Wood day at the Fire Rat hour: the Yin Wood Rat nobility (六乙鼠贵). Yin Wood uses Yang Metal (庚) as its officer, and it dies at Rat (子); seeing Yang Fire (丙) is Hurting Officer (伤), and Yang Fire secretly invites Yin Metal (辛) to turn the Killings (煞) into authority. Where the pillars show no Yang Metal or Yin Metal, with no Ox (丑) binding and no Horse (午) clashing, the pattern stands and is noble. If any of those dislikes are present and the month qi does not run through, with nothing to rescue it, violent and cruel, poor and low, carrying illness and short-lived. Wood Ox (乙丑) day at the Fire Rat hour: the self weak, ordinary; with no Horse piercing or clashing, worthy, virtuous, warm and thick. Monkey (申) and Rooster (酉) in year or month, the censorate. Tiger (寅) and Rat, conspicuously noble. It dislikes Fire Tiger (丙寅), Earth Goat (己未), Wood Dog (甲戌) and Earth Ox (己丑) months, which govern cruel punishment and a bad death. Wood Rabbit (乙卯) day at the Fire Rat hour: high. Dragon (辰), Dog (戌), Ox, Goat (未) and Pig (亥) in year or month, with no officer star in sight, noble. Wood Snake (乙巳) day at the Fire Rat hour: favourable. If Snake (巳) or Horse stand in year or month, the life is short; otherwise the self is solitary and toils. Pure Earth, wealth strong producing the officer, running a western period; Rat and Dragon running Water and Fire periods — both second or third grade. A Monkey month is Direct Officer (正官), a Rooster month Seven Killings (偏官), a Rabbit (卯) month the Established Prosperity (建禄) — all favourable. It dislikes a Wood Tiger (甲寅) month, punishment and early death; a Wood Rooster (乙酉) month is low and base. Wood Goat (乙未) day at the Fire Rat hour: ordinary. If Rat or Pig stand in year or month, greatly noble, and the year period likewise. It dislikes Snake and Goat months, punishment and injury; a Fire Monkey (丙申) month dies without a whole body; an Earth Ox month breaks the ancestors and dies badly. Wood Rooster day at the Fire Rat hour: noble, the self solitary, rising and falling over and over; where the month carries Water qi and no Yin Metal or Horse is seen, also noble. Wood Pig (乙亥) day at the Fire Rat hour: transforming to blue and red, it governs blessing. Born in a Metal Dragon (庚辰) year or month, wealth and rank. Pure Pig, made and unmade. An Ox month running a southern period, a junior office. Snake, Horse and western periods, extremely poor. It dislikes a Water Dragon (壬辰) month, punishment; a Wood Rooster month breaks the ancestors, highly noble, and dies badly in the midst of it. Verse: the six Yin Wood days (六乙) noble pattern at the Fire Rat hour — with no clash or breaking it is remarkable at last; not meeting Yang Metal, Monkey, Snake, Rooster or Ox, it certainly rides the carriage and bows at the vermilion steps. Verse: a Yin Wood day with Fire Rat at the hour — Hurting Officer injured to the full, flourishing. Pig, Rabbit and Goat months are out of the ordinary, and the period comes to the self hale and strong. With Yin Metal and Yang Metal unseen the blessing comes out; a Horse clashing and an Ox binding make it middling. Meeting punishment and injury it is all for nothing. This destiny is now in decline and now in strength.

For a Yin Wood day at the Fire Ox hour: the Eating God (食) meets wealth and officer. Yin Fire (丁) is the Eating God, Yang Metal (庚) the officer and Yin Earth (己) the wealth. Within Ox (丑) there is Yin Metal (辛) binding into a frame and Yin Earth in its position; where there is something to lean on, noble. Where a month of Metal qi transforms it, rich, thick and honoured; where the month qi does not run through, ordinary. Wood Ox (乙丑) day at the Fire Ox hour: born in autumn, authority, and it governs carrying illness; summer favourable, winter middling, spring strong — noble and long-lived. Wood Rabbit (乙卯) day at the Fire Ox hour: a Pig (亥) month, the self strong and seeing Yin Metal as Seven Killings (偏官), with Yin Fire in the pillars to check it — the censorate and a military office. Wood Snake (乙巳) day born at the Fire Ox hour: Pig, Rabbit (卯), Goat (未) and Tiger (寅) months, noble. Where a month of Metal qi gives it something to lean on, the blessing is weighty. Wood Goat (乙未) day at the Fire Ox hour: Dragon (辰), Dog (戌), Ox and Goat months, wealthy. Spring, long life; autumn, name and profit; summer, poor and low; winter, ordinary. Monkey (申) in year or month, a military office of the third grade. Wood Rooster (乙酉) day at the Fire Ox hour: where it carries Wood qi and has something to lean on, conspicuously noble. Monkey and Ox in year or month are also good; Tiger and Pig better still. Wood Pig (乙亥) day at the Fire Ox hour: a Pig month, the temper quick with self-command, the wife worthy and the children filial, office to the sixth or seventh grade. A Horse (午) month is its long life; with officer and Resource (印) showing at the stems in year or month, greatly noble. Verse: the granary opens at the hour when Yin Wood sees Yin Fire — the Eating God sits on the vault, close to the prosperity star (禄) and wealth. Without a key it does not become a guest at court, but it is still an easeful person with blessing. Verse: a Yin Wood day meeting Fire Ox at the hour — the star of long life comes out, beyond doubt. The self dwells in Capricorn, so do not mind the delay; money is heaped up inside the vault. Where year, hour and month bind, it comes out; where they are void or punished, wife and children are hard to keep. For the six Yin Wood days at the Earth Tiger hour: wealth spoiled and the prosperity star turned away. Yin Wood uses Yang Metal (庚) as its officer, and within Tiger (寅) there is Yang Fire (丙) — Hurting Officer (伤官) turning from the prosperity star. It uses Yang Earth (戊) or Yin Earth (己) as wealth, and the Yang Wood (甲) strong within Tiger spoils the wealth; the person's dealings are made and unmade, ordinary. Where it carries Earth qi, favourable. Wood Ox (乙丑) day at the Earth Tiger hour: high; born in a Rat (子) year or Dog (戌) month, wealth and rank. Dragon (辰) and Dog running Wood and Fire periods, awe and authority. Wood Rabbit (乙卯) day at the Earth Tiger hour: blessing comes out of the punishment. Born in autumn, noble. A Rooster (酉) year meeting Dragon, Dog, Ox (丑) or Goat (未) months, wealthy. A Rabbit (卯) month is the Established Prosperity (建禄), a Horse (午) month the Resource (印) producing; with officer and Resource showing, all favourable. Verse: a Yin Wood day at the Tiger hour, reckon it closely — the person draws right and draws wrong to himself; with the period in decline and meeting void, punishment and injury besides, he labours in body and mind with no settled term. Verse: a Yin Wood day meeting the Earth Tiger hour — it is the hidden loss injuring the wealth. Hurting Officer turning from the prosperity star stands in the pillars; wealth, rank, wife and children punished and harmed. A Yin Wood (乙) day born meeting Earth Rabbit (己卯): the hour sits on the day's prosperity star (禄) and the wealth comes to it well; strong and carrying Wood qi it is noble beyond doubt, though Rooster (酉), Earth and a heavy Yin Metal (辛) are also a vexation. For a Yin Wood day at the Earth Rabbit hour: the prosperity star enters the temple hall. Yin Wood meets Rabbit (卯) as its Established Prosperity (建禄), and the person is fine and handsome; carrying Wood and Fire, noble. Seeing Yang Metal (庚) or Yin Metal injures the prosperity star and breaks the destiny, and it suffers eye complaints. If born in Snake (巳), Rooster or Ox (丑) months, ordinary clothing and the prosperity star. Dragon (辰), Dog (戌), Ox and Goat (未) favourable. A Monkey (申) month is also favourable. Wood Ox (乙丑) day at the Earth Rabbit hour: high, and great blessing in middle age. Born in spring the self is too strong and solitary. Summer, poor. Autumn, carrying illness. Winter, warm and thick. Where the pillars show no Yin Metal, favourable. In Dragon, Dog, Ox or Goat months, gold and purple nobility. Wood Rabbit (乙卯) day at the Earth Rabbit hour: high; born in spring at its strength, a monk or a priest, well provided. Summer ordinary; with no Yin Metal in sight, favourable. Autumn, carrying illness. Winter, warm and thick. Rabbit and Ox in year or month, conspicuous and long-lived. Wood Snake (乙巳) day at the Earth Rabbit hour: spring solitary and poor, summer middling, autumn carrying illness, winter noble. Horse (午) and Dragon in year or month, and the branches linked in one run, better still. Wood Goat (乙未) day at the Earth Rabbit hour: with no Yang Metal or Yin Metal in year or month, noble. Born in autumn, look to whether the ground is thick or thin; born in a Water Dog (壬戌) year or month, third or fourth grade. Wood Rooster (乙酉) day at the Earth Rabbit hour: fine. The early years break the ancestral estate, the middle years make money; a Goat year brings solitude and punishment. Wood Pig (乙亥) day at the Earth Rabbit hour: born in a Tiger (寅) or Snake month with no Yang Metal or Yin Metal in sight, it is the day’s prosperity star returning at the hour (日禄归时) pattern — conspicuous, pure and noble. Pure Rabbit in year and month, a high monk or a feathered adept. Dog, outstandingly clever, with money and the prosperity star. Verse: the pattern of the prosperity star residing at the hour is not the same as others: with the Eating God (食神) the horse must be met; Hurting Officer (伤官) and Resource (印) periods are all favourable, and where no officer is met the prosperity star is rich of itself. Verse: a Yin Wood day with Earth Rabbit at the hour — Indirect Wealth (偏财) and the hour's prosperity star come to meet. Where Yin Metal and the Rooster character do not punish it, the tiger's roll certainly carries his name. Parents and the six relations are hard to lean on, and the rank of siblings each fly their own way. Writing shines and there is talent in it; with nothing broken and nothing clashed, a noble destiny.

For a Yin Wood day at the Metal Dragon hour: the wife worthy and the children noble. Yin Wood binds Yang Metal (庚) and transforms to Metal; where it carries a Monkey (申), Snake (巳), Rooster or Ox (丑) month the person is fine and handsome and governs nobility, though eye complaints must be guarded against. If no transformation is seen, take Yang Water as the Resource (印) and Yang Metal as the officer: Dragon (辰) Earth and Yin Water (癸) bind into a frame, the Yin Wood has something to lean on, and running a southeastern period it is conspicuously noble and at peace. Wood Ox (乙丑) day at the Metal Dragon hour: breaks the ancestors and harms the father; the self weak and troubled by illness; where the month qi runs through, noble. Rat (子) and Monkey in year or month with Yang Wood (甲) and Yang Earth (戊) showing at the stems, the three marvels bound together — greatly noble. Wood Rabbit (乙卯) day at the Metal Dragon hour: wealth and rank. Where year and month carry Fire and Earth, greatly noble. Wood Snake (乙巳) day at the Metal Dragon hour: dealings made and unmade; a monk or priest, wealth and rank with illness. A common man is punished and harmed in wife and children. Tiger (寅), Snake and Horse (午) months, officer and Killings held in check, favourable. Pure Rooster transforming to Metal governs a thick blessing. Wood Pig (乙亥) day at the Metal Dragon hour: if not noble then wealthy. If Yin Water and Yang Earth in year or month make one transformation, and Monkey and Rabbit are both strong, and Snake, Ox and Rooster gather as Metal, running Wood and Earth periods, the position reaches gold and purple. Verse: Yin Wood and Yang Metal meeting is noble beyond doubt — yin Wood and yang Metal exactly in their season; with the period favourable, the self strong and nothing clashing or breaking, promotion comes and a noble hand to lift him. Verse: a Yin Wood day at the Metal Dragon hour, upright — the heavenly officer guards the vault at the origin of heaven; in youth the tiger's roll passes his name along, his nature warm, good, respectful and frugal. Gentleman or commoner, the wife is worthy and the children noble. Wealth enters the prosperity star (禄) position and he is promoted. In the southern Li, the south (离), Yang Earth and Yin Water join with Fire — and in the midst of wealth and rank there is danger.
