Yang Fire (Bing, 丙) day master: The Sun

Fire in the 1st month: the three yang open out and the Fire grows hot. Take Yang Water (壬) as the one to honour, with Yang Metal (庚) in support. Both showing means the examinations; Yang Water showing with Yang Metal hidden still means rising by an irregular road. One Yang Metal high in the stems with a Yang Fire (丙) or two hidden in the branches means office bought with grain — open-handed, heroic, and able beyond the common run.

正月丙火，三陽開泰，火氣漸炎，取壬為尊，庚金佐之，壬庚兩透，科甲定然，即壬透庚藏，亦有異途顯達。

Fire in the 2nd month: the warm force stretches upward. Use Yang Water (壬) in particular. Yang Water showing in the stems, with no Yin Fire (丁) to transform it, and Yang Metal (庚), Yin Metal (辛) or Yin Earth (己) showing as well so that Yang Water has a root, means the examinations for certain.

二月丙火，陽氣舒升，端用壬水，壬透天干，不見丁化，加以庚辛已亦透，壬水有根，定主科甲。

Fire in the 3rd month: the heat rises. Use Yang Water (壬). If the branches form an Earth frame, take Yang Wood (甲) as support — Yang Water cannot be done without. Yang Water and Yang Wood both showing suits the examinations; the one thing to avoid is Yang Metal (庚) showing and cutting the Yang Wood down, which leaves a licentiate and no more. With no Yang Wood, use Yang Metal to help Yang Water drain the Earth.

三月丙火，氣漸炎升，用壬水，或成土局，取甲木為輔，壬不可離，壬申兩透，科甲定宜，惟忌庚出制甲，則秀才而已。

Fire in the 4th month holds its own seat at Snake (巳) and the Fire blazes. Use Yang Water (壬) in particular, to break the heat and complete the crossing. Without Yang Water the yang stands unsupported and the light does not come clear; Yang Metal (庚) is needed to open the source, and only then does the Water have a root.

四月丙火，建祿於巳，火勢炎炎，宜專用壬水，解炎威之力，成既濟之功。如無壬水，孤陽失輔，難透清光，得庚發水源，方為有根之水。

Fire in the 5th month is hotter still. Yang Water (壬) and Yang Metal (庚) both high in the stems make a first-rank chart. One Yang Water without Yang Metal still means a place at the academy — but guard against Yang Earth (戊) or Yin Earth (己) showing, and against Yin Fire (丁) joining Yang Water, either of which makes an ordinary person, as does neither Yang Metal nor Yang Water showing at all.

五月丙火愈炎，得壬庚高透，方為上命。或一壬無庚，亦主頁監，猶防戊己出乾，丁壬化合，則為平人，即不透庚壬。

Fire in the 6th month is receding and the cold begins. Yang Water (壬) is the useful element (用神), with Yang Metal (庚) in support. Both showing and standing next to each other in mutual production means the examinations and office.

六月丙火退氣，三代生寒，壬水為用，取庚輔佐。

Fire in the 7th month: the sun has turned west and the yang is weakening — the sun near the hills, and Earth wherever it appears dims the light. Only the sun on lake and sea, giving light to the evening, will do, so Yang Water (壬) is still used to carry the brightness.

七月丙火，太陽轉西，陽氣衰矣，日近西山，見土皆晦，惟日照湖海，暮夜光天，故仍用壬水輔映光輝。

Fire in the 8th month: the sun near dusk, its remaining light held on lake and sea. Yang Water (壬) is still used to carry it. With much Yang Fire (丙) in the chart, a single Yang Water high in the stems is the rare thing, and means a place in the examinations, wealth and rank both; a Yang Water hidden in a branch still means a licentiate.

八月丙火，日近黃昏，丙之餘光，存於湖海，仍用壬水輔映。

Fire in the 9th month is weaker again, and what it fears is Earth dimming the light. Use Yang Wood (甲) first and Yang Water (壬) second.

九月丙火，火氣愈退，所忌土晦光，必須先用甲木，次取壬水。

Fire in the 10th month: the sun has lost its season. Yang Wood (甲), Yang Earth (戊) and Yang Metal (庚) showing in the stems means the examinations, and a person of high and clean temper, first among the lettered.

十月丙火，太陽失令，得見甲戊庚出乾，可云科甲，主為人性好清高，斯文領袖。

Fire in the 11th month: at the winter solstice one yang is born, and what was weak turns strong again. Yang Water (壬) is first, with Yang Earth (戊) in support.

十一月丙火，冬至一陽生，弱中複強，壬水為最，戊土佐之。

Fire in the 12th month: the second yang comes in, and snow still puts down frost. Yang Water (壬) is welcome as the useful element (用神). Yin Earth (己) holds the season, so with much Earth Yang Wood (甲) cannot be spared either. Yang Water and Yang Wood both showing suits the examinations; Yang Wood hidden means a licentiate and no more. Without Yang Wood, one Yang Water showing means rank taken out of wealth.

十二月丙火，氣進二陽，每雪欺霜，喜壬為用，己土司令，土多又不可少甲，壬甲兩透，科甲堪宜，甲藏則秀才而已，或無甲得一壬透，富中取貴。

A Yang Fire (丙) day born at the Earth Rat (戊子) hour: wealth and officer produced and strong, meeting the Eating God (食神); where the month qi supports it, most noble — the self declining and leaning on another is an ordinary person. For a Yang Fire day at the Earth Rat hour: the officer strong and the wealth producing. Yang Fire uses Yin Metal (辛) as wealth and Yin Water (癸) as officer; Yang Fire binds Yin Metal and Yang Earth (戊) binds Yin Water, and within Rat (子) the Yin Water is strong and the Yin Metal produced, while Yang Fire has no qi. If it carries Fire qi and the month gives it something to lean on, noble; not running through, poor and low. Carrying Wood qi is also favourable. Fire Rat (丙子) day at the Earth Rat hour: Tiger (寅), Snake (巳), Rabbit (卯) and Goat (未) months — Wood can produce Fire, greatly noble. A winter month, Yang Fire without qi, poor and short-lived. A Dog (戌) month running Fire and Earth periods, fifth or sixth grade. It dislikes a Fire Snake (丁巳) month, early death; an Earth Rooster (己酉) month breaks the household and loses the land, the self low. Fire Tiger (丙寅) day at the Earth Rat hour: born in Rabbit or Ox (丑) months, pure and noble. Tiger and Dog, ordinary. A summer month with the self strong is favourable only where the pillars hold Water and Metal. A Rat month is Direct Officer (正官), greatly noble. It dislikes a Water Snake (癸巳) month, punishment; a Water Pig (癸亥) month, a bad death; an Earth Rooster month, great ruin. Fire Dragon (丙辰) day at the Earth Rat hour: Fire Dragon is the Virtuous Day (日德) pattern and is glad to see the officer star. If born in a Dog month, the self strong suits it best — military nobility. A Tiger month running Metal and Water periods, middling nobility. A Monkey (申) month, the triad binding the Killings (煞) with a Resource (印), noble. Fire Dog (丙戌) day at the Earth Rat hour: born in spring, the Direct Resource (印绶) is best. Summer, the self too strong, ordinary. Autumn, wealth strong and the self declining; with something to lean on, noble. Pure Rooster in year and month, the nobility of advancement in letters. It dislikes an Earth Pig month, dying without a whole body; a Water Ox month, poor and short-lived. Verse: the living and the livelihood flourish through the four seasons — Yang Fire meeting Earth Rat, officer and Eating God (食) together in blessing; with nothing injuring it, later years all come to something, and where the favourable meets the ill, the perilous runs through. Verse: a Fire Rat hour meeting Earth Rat — the officer star and the Eating God blessing ranked together. Meeting Horse, Yin Fire (丁) and Goat it sinks and is buried; coming through in middle age, greatly at ease. Parents, wife and children glad to bind. Hidden in the breast, literary talent. If a good period should come for a time, wealth, rank and easeful leisure.

For a Yang Fire day at the Earth Ox hour: Hurting Officer (伤官) turning from the prosperity star, contemptuous of things and high in will. Yang Fire uses Yin Water (癸) as its officer, and within Ox (丑) there is the remaining qi of Yin Water, injured by Earth open and hidden; where Yin Water shows in the pillars it is calamity. If Yang Metal or Yin Metal (辛) are seen, Hurting Officer producing wealth, it turns to blessing and good fortune. Fire Rat (丙子) day at the Earth Ox hour: Tiger (寅), Pig (亥), Monkey and Dragon (辰) in year or month, with wealth, Resource (印) and Eating God (食) showing at the stems, noble. Fire Tiger (丙寅) day at the Earth Ox hour: ordinary; born in a Wood Rooster (乙酉) month it is the Direct Wealth (正财) pattern, and with Yin Wood and Yang Metal hale and strong, noble. Snake (巳) and Ox in year or month with officer and Resource showing at the stems, noble. Fire Dragon (丙辰) day at the Earth Ox hour: Monkey and Pig in year or month, transforming to Water, favourable; not transforming, the life is short. A Dog (戌) month clashes the vault, and there is no one it does not bring out. Tiger and Horse (午) make the self strong, forming the high Fire pattern — greatly noble. A Monkey month, letters and a Confucian office made. Rabbit (卯), noble. Rat (子) and Dragon gathering as officer, Tiger and Rabbit gathering as Resource — both favourable. Fire Dog (丙戌) day at the Earth Ox hour: high; military punishment and afterwards it flourishes. Born in Pig or Rabbit months with Fire and Metal periods, greatly noble. Dragon and Goat (未), the four vaults complete, Fire and Earth binding into a frame — greatly wealthy. Verse: a Yang Fire day with wealth and officer stored in the vault — the characters Dog, Dragon and Goat make the writing conspicuous; the self declining and without a key besides, seeking name and seeking profit is always ordinary. Verse: a Yang Fire day meeting Earth Ox at the hour — Hurting Officer and the wealth vault hidden away. The period crossing Goat and Dog is out of the ordinary, and breaking out wealth and officer it certainly prospers. Close to the noble he plots and seizes — robbing wealth (劫财)— reckon it, and though there is gain there is harm. The six relations, true and false, are little in accord; judge it straight by the hour and do not wonder at it.

A Yang Fire (丙) day born at the Metal Tiger (庚寅) hour: the hall of learning and living qi help the self; where the period holds a binding running through a Metal frame, certainly a person of glory, wealth and rank. For a Yang Fire day at the Metal Tiger hour: living qi and the hall of learning. Yang Fire has its long life upon Tiger (寅) — writing and fine qi. Yang Fire takes Yang Metal (庚) and Yin Metal (辛) as wealth; upon Tiger the Yang Metal is cut off and the Yang Fire strong. If it carries a month qi or Metal frame, the wealth is strong, wealth and rank both complete, and it is glad of a western period; not carrying the frame, the wealth is thin. Fire Rat (丙子) day at the Metal Tiger hour: born in a Rat (子) month, close to the noble. A Water Rooster (癸酉) month running Water and Wood periods, highly noble; Fire and Wood periods, fifth grade and above. Goat (未), Monkey (申) and a Water Horse (癸午) year or month, the self in a military office, greatly noble, the life shallow. Fire Tiger (丙寅) day at the Metal Tiger hour: noble but not for long. Born in a Rooster (酉) or Monkey year or month, a cold post through the generations. Rat, Ox (丑), Tiger and Goat, conspicuously noble. Pure Tiger, better still. A Yang Fire (丙) day born at the Metal Rabbit (辛卯) hour: strong Wood, two wives, a person of cunning; not strong and transforming to Water it is in the country of death, and lust and desire follow him about with many fondnesses. For a Yang Fire day at the Metal Rabbit hour: wealth spoiled meeting a binding. A Yang Fire day is at its bathing upon Rabbit (卯), and seeing Yin Metal (辛) is the binding spirit. If the self is very strong and no transformation is had, it is merely a person without propriety, greedy for lust — better than the self weak and transforming to Water, for Water dies upon Rabbit: it flowers without fruiting, and the person is habitually cunning and false. Only Fire Horse (丙午) and Fire Tiger (丙寅) born in a spring month, the self strong and untransformed, are conspicuous and fine in letters and nobility. Fire Rat (丙子) day at the Metal Rabbit hour: Rat (子) and Rabbit punish each other — injury to the wife and harm to the children. With year and month the same, it governs first place in the lists and the nobility of one who attends the throne. Where Tiger (寅), Horse (午), Ox (丑), Dog (戌) and the stems and branches all bind, greatly noble. Fire Tiger day at the Metal Rabbit hour: no ancestors, standing on its own; ailments of the limbs and body. Tiger, Rabbit, Goat (未) and Rat months, noble. Other months middling, and the year period likewise. Fire Dragon (丙辰) day at the Metal Rabbit hour: born in Tiger or Dog months, the high (天月二德). A Snake (巳) month running a northern period, noble. Verse: Yang Fire and Yin Metal transforming to Water do not answer to each other; with help and the self strong it is greatly favourable and flourishing; if the four pillars meet clash, control and breaking, he labours in mind and body and the days pass by. Verse: a Yang Fire day meeting Metal Rabbit at the hour — greed for wealth spoils the Resource (印) and it is hard to make. Wealth and officer periods step out a conspicuous name; the self weak, the temper unsettled. Parents and the six relations hard to lean on; standing up and changing his ancestors, it is made. The rank of siblings each look to their own road ahead; with a breaking, an ordinary destiny.

A Yang Fire (丙) day born at the Water Dragon (壬辰) hour: the Killings (煞) star sits on its vault and Fire is hard to be close to; the self strong and it turns instead to office and nobility, and if weak, certainly a poor and short-lived person. For a Yang Fire day at the Water Dragon hour: Water and Fire not yet crossed. Yang Fire sees Yang Water (壬) as Seven Killings (偏官), and upon Dragon (辰) the Yang Water binds into a frame — Fire dies and has no light. If born in spring or summer with the self strong, the ghost turns into the officer, and running a period where the self is strong besides, noble. Autumn and winter, the self declining and the ghost strong, with nothing to lean on, poor, low and crippled. If it does not carry a month where the self is strong, poor and low; with something to lean on and rescue it, and a month where the self is strong, and the period the same again, noble. Fire Rat (丙子) day at the Fire Monkey hour: if it carries Fire qi, or a Tiger (寅) or Rabbit (卯) month, and runs a period where the self is strong besides, favourable. Year and month pure Metal — abandoning the self and going to wealth, also read as favourable. Fire Tiger (丙寅) day at the Fire Monkey hour: hour and day face and clash — grief over wife and children; carrying a month of Fire qi and running a period where the self is strong, favourable. The Seven Killings (偏官) in glory and strength is right and wrong; within it, wife and wealth follow as they may. If there is nothing to rescue it, the month where the self is strong does not run through, and the blade spirit meets no punishment or clash, the person is fierce and cruel, unclear on propriety and right, with a beginning and no end. Verse: a Yang Fire day meeting Fire Rooster at the hour — the heaven-origin, blazing Fire, melting Metal. The six relations keep each other and are not at peace; obstacles ahead make it hard to advance. Day and night he thinks it over and is not satisfied; holding office he still worries at his own greed. If it meets a Snake month the household gate is changed; Rat and Horse make bystanders resentful.

A Yang Fire (丙) day born at the Earth Dog (戊戌) hour: within a Fire frame it meets the Eating God (食神); where the month qi runs through with Fire it is blessing and long life, and not running through, meeting the favourable, it is still an ordinary person. For a Fire Tiger (丙寅) day at the Earth Dog hour: the Eating God of the temple hall. Yang Fire takes Yang Earth (戊) as its Eating God and star of long life; upon Dog (戌) the Yang Fire enters its vault and the Yang Earth holds its own position. If it carries a month of Fire qi and a southeastern period, the blessing is thick and there is long life; not carrying it, ordinary. Fire Rat (丙子) day at the Earth Dog hour: long life, name and profit not lost. Born with Tiger (寅), Pig (亥), Rabbit (卯) and Goat (未) as the Resource (印), and Monkey (申), Rooster (酉), Dog and Snake (巳) in the year, noble. A summer month, blessing and long life both complete. Layer upon layer of blessing and the prosperity star (禄) come of themselves from heaven; wealth and rank, the wife worthy and the children envied. A gentleman's writing is established early; a common man's goods run on and on. The heavenly solitary and the parents are drawn away early; Dragon and Dog are the key that opens it.

A Yang Fire (丙) day born at the Earth Pig (己亥) hour: the Yang Water (壬) strong within Pig (亥) is injured by Yin Earth (己); only where the month qi runs through is it noble, and not meeting Tiger (寅) or Rabbit (卯) it governs the commonplace. For a Yang Fire day at the Earth Pig hour: the ghost strong and the self cut off. Yang Fire sees Yin Earth as Hurting Officer (伤官), Yang Water as the proper ghost and Yang Wood (甲) as the Overturned Meal (倒食); upon Pig there is an open Yin Earth, a strong Yang Water producing Yang Wood, and the Yang Fire's qi cut off. If it carries a month where the self is strong and has something to lean on, the ghost turns into the officer and it governs nobility — though it is fierce and cruel in the end. Running a period where the self is strong is also noble; the self weak with nothing to lean on, the month qi not running through, and a Yang Water showing in the pillars — calamity a hundredfold, contemptuous of things and high in spirit, governing the ordinary. Fire Dragon (丙辰) day at the Earth Pig hour: the Virtuous Day (日德) pattern. Born in a Tiger month, favourable; a Dragon month, a monk or priest and it governs wealth, in a common man solitude and harm. A Dog month clashing Dragon, a Snake month clashing Pig, the Yang Fire strong in its vault — all favourable. Rabbit and Goat gathering, running Metal and Water periods; Monkey and Rat gathering, running Wood and Fire periods — both noble. Fire Horse (丙午) day at the Earth Pig hour: military nobility. Born in Tiger, Snake or Horse months, the wife taken twice and the children late; if not noble then wealthy. Autumn and winter, name and profit advance and retreat. Rooster (酉), Horse and Dog, greatly noble. Fire Monkey (丙申) day at the Earth Pig hour: born in spring or summer, moving the root and changing the leaves, taking the wife and changing his blessing. Autumn and winter, ordinary. A Rooster month running a southeastern period, the censorate. Fire Dog (丙戌) day at the Earth Pig hour: Tiger, Rabbit, Snake and Horse — the Wood producing and the Fire blazing, the wife injured and the children few, clever, wealthy and noble; Rooster, Pig, Rat and Ox, ordinary, though an eastern period is also noble. Verse: a Yang Fire day at the Pig hour, the destiny is highest — like orchid and iris rising out of the weeds; if the four pillars carry clash, control and breaking besides, seeking name and seeking profit is labour for nothing. Verse: a Yang Fire day with Earth Pig at the hour — without a Yang Water character it is rare and remarkable. In the destiny few children and two or three wives; within it, glad to meet the Nobleman (天乙). Parents and the rank of siblings travel far; punishment and void make writing and blessing hard to keep whole. All because the eight characters have their high and low — and above all it must not covet wealth and be dismissed from office.
