Yin Earth (Ji, 己) day master: The Garden

Earth in the 1st month: the field is still frozen, because the last of the year's cold has not gone. So Yang Fire (丙) is the one to honour — with Yang Fire shining warm, things grow of themselves. Avoid Yang Water (壬), which is a sickness to Yin Earth (己): Yang Water is the water of lakes and rivers, and once it rises the field is washed away, turned to sand, and the seedlings lost with it. Yang Earth (戊) is needed as a dyke to keep the garden. With much Yang Water there must be Yang Earth to check it, and Yang Earth showing in the stems means a place at court; lacking that Yang Earth, an ordinary life.

正月己土，田園猶凍，蓋因臘氣未除，餘寒未退，故丙為尊，得丙照暖，萬物自生，忌見壬水，反為己病，何也，壬乃江湖之水，湖水一發，則田園洗蕩，變為沙土，而根苗盡沒矣，須戊作堤，以保園圃，壬多要見戊制，有戊出乾者，定主玉堂金馬，若乏制戊，必屬平常。

Earth in the 2nd month: the warm force rises. The crop is not yet made and the field not yet opened, though things are coming out of the ground. Take Yang Wood (甲) first to break the Earth up, avoiding the joining; then take Yin Water (癸) to moisten it. Yang Wood and Yin Water showing in the stems means the examinations for certain, and with a Yang Fire (丙) showing as well, standing above a hundred colleagues. A single Yang Water (壬) present means slight office.

二月己土，陽氣漸升，雖禾稼未成，萬物出土，田園未展，先取甲木疏之，忌合，次取癸水潤之，甲癸出乾，定主科甲，加以一丙出透，勢壓百僚，一見壬水，微末官職。

Earth in the 3rd month is exactly the time for planting the crop. Yang Fire (丙) first and Yin Water (癸) after, so the Earth is warm and moist, and then Yang Wood (甲) to break it up. All three showing in the stems means high office; any one of them showing means the examinations for certain — but they must be well placed, and Yang Metal (庚) is the sickness here.

三月己土，正栽培禾稼之時，先丙後癸，土暖而潤，隨用甲疏，三者俱透天干，必官居黃閣，或三者透一，科甲定然，但要得地，郤以庚金為病。

A Yin Earth (己) day born at the Wood Rat (甲子) hour: the officer star seen openly and wealth hidden; where there is something to lean on and the month qi runs through, a life's clothing and the prosperity star (禄) come of themselves from heaven. For a Yin Earth day at the Wood Rat hour: the officer open and the wealth hidden. Yin Earth uses Yang Wood (甲) as its officer, Yin Water (癸) as wealth and Yin Metal (辛) as Eating God (食), and Rat (子) is the Nobleman (天乙) noble; upon Rat there is an open Yang Wood and a hidden Yin Water, with Yin Metal at its long life. If the self has something to lean on and the month qi runs through, wealth and rank; if the self is not strong, running a period of Earth qi is also good. Earth Ox (己丑) day at the Wood Rat hour: transforming, noble; Horse (午) and Tiger (寅) in year or month, an early death; carrying a month of Earth qi, noble. It dislikes a Wood Tiger (甲寅) month, a bad death in the midst of nobility; a Fire Goat (丁未) month, taking punishment; a Fire Ox (丁丑) month, breaking the ancestors, losing the home village and a bad death. Earth Rabbit (己卯) day at the Wood Rat hour: it breaks the ancestors first and then flourishes, or is injured in the midst of strength. Dragon (辰), Dog (戌), Ox (丑) and Goat (未) months, noble. Horse, the self strong. Rat, nobility gathered. Pig (亥), the officer at its long life — all greatly noble. It dislikes an Earth Snake (己巳) month, ruin and a cruel death; a Metal Monkey (庚申) month, spilt blood and a bad death; a Water Rat (壬子) month, death by punishment and harm. Earth Snake day at the Metal Rat (庚子) hour: Dragon, Dog, Ox and Goat months, the censorate at the third grade; it should run Water and Wood periods — a western period comes to nothing, and a southern period leaves wealth and officer without qi, an empty name and a thin profit, noble but not conspicuous. Rat and Tiger in year or month with a southeastern period, conspicuously noble. The Shen Bai Jing (神白经) says: transforming to Earth produces blessing, but it does not show. It dislikes a Water Tiger (壬寅) month, taking punishment; a Wood Goat (乙未) month, punishment and injury; a Water Rooster (癸酉) month, early death. Earth Goat (己未) day at the Wood Rat hour: high, the self sitting on the officer vault. Dragon, Dog, Ox and Goat months, favourable. Tiger and Pig months, the officer strong, the writing rousing and coming out, conspicuous nobility easily made. Snake (巳) and Ox, literary nobility late in coming. Tiger and Rabbit (卯), poor and low. It dislikes a Wood Monkey (甲申) month, dying without a whole body; a Fire Rat (丙子) month, solitude and poverty; a Fire Ox month, punishment and harm. Earth Rooster (己酉) day at the Wood Rat hour: Tiger, Monkey (申), Horse, Goat and Ox in year or month, literary nobility and the censorate. A Horse month with a northeastern period, the highest grade. It dislikes a Metal Tiger (庚寅) year, ruin and a bad death; an Earth Snake month, cruel and ill; an Earth Dog (戊戌) month, solitary and a death of blood. Earth Pig (己亥) day at the Wood Rat hour: spring and summer, wealth and officer produced and strong, favourable; autumn, winter and the four seasonal months, turning from the prosperity star and chasing the horse, ill. A Tiger month with Metal and Fire periods, a junior office. A Horse month with a northeastern period, gold and purple. It dislikes a Water Tiger month, a bad death; a Water Monkey (壬申) month, passing through poverty and meeting punishment; a Water Rooster month, ruin. Verse: a Yin Earth day is glad to meet the Wood Rat hour — wealth and officer both fine, noble and rare; one morning he meets the gathering of wind and cloud, and alone walks the toad palace and breaks the cassia branch. Verse: a Yin Earth day with Wood Rat at the hour — transforming and producing, the Earth thick, nourishing the ground. Wealth and officer help it and show their light, like a blue dragon playing in water. Not meeting Yang Metal (庚) or Rabbit and Horse, the person's prosperity star arrives and blessing is level with it. A common man's blessing comes out and he does something with it; a gentleman passes the examinations and takes his degree.

For a Yin Earth day at the Wood Ox hour: sole wealth meeting the ghost. Upon Ox (丑) there is an open Yin Wood (乙) as the ghost and a hidden Yin Water (癸) as wealth. If there is something to lean on and it runs through with the self strong, noble; running through in the period is also favourable. If the ghost has help and, being strong, cannot be borne, clothing and the prosperity star (禄) are ordinary. Earth Ox (己丑) day at the Wood Ox hour: Seven Killings (偏官) at the hour, dwelling in a military office as a garrison commander — look also to the region to judge it. A Rabbit (卯) month with Metal and Water periods, sixth or seventh grade. Earth Rabbit (己卯) day at the Wood Ox hour: Rat (子) and Monkey (申) months running Metal and Earth periods, marquis or earl. Snake (巳), Rooster (酉), Ox and Dog (戌) in year or month, all favourable. Earth Snake (己巳) day at the Wood Ox hour: Tiger (寅) and Rabbit months, the Seven Killings pattern. With no Rooster or Dog character, an advancing-in-letters noble destiny. Earth Goat (己未) day at the Wood Ox hour: hour and day clash together — the wife producing wealth will do. Verse: a Yin Earth day with Wood Ox at the hour — in the vault the wasting ghost stirs up calamity. The ancestral estate has its gains and losses; in what he plans, money goes and money comes. Dog and Goat (未) punishing and clashing bring blessing out; without a key, he moves back and forth. Both parents and the order of siblings are hard to rely on; with a rescue, nobility is taken out of the middle of it.

A Yin Earth (己) day born at the Fire Tiger (丙寅) hour: the officer hidden and the Resource (印) open, strengthening the self; where the month runs through Wood qi with no clash or breaking, the nobility of the three terraces and eight positions is made. For a Yin Earth day at the Fire Tiger hour: officer and Resource produced and strong. Yin Earth uses Yang Wood (甲) as its officer and Yang Fire (丙) as its Resource; upon Tiger (寅) the Yang Wood is strong and the Yang Fire produced. If there is nothing broken and the month qi carries a Wood frame, greatly noble. It is glad to run Wood and Fire and should not have Metal and Water — and the year ruler likewise. Earth Ox (己丑) day at the Fire Tiger hour: spring, the officer strong; summer, the Resource strong; autumn, the crossing complete; winter, middling. Dragon (辰) and Dog (戌) in year or month, literary nobility and conspicuousness. Pure Ox (丑), long life. A Dog month with Wood and Fire periods, fifth or sixth grade. Earth Rabbit (己卯) day at the Fire Tiger hour: Horse (午) and Dragon in year or month, the writing conspicuous, greatly noble. Tiger and Horse, office to the third grade. Earth Snake (己巳) day at the Fire Tiger hour: punished first and strong after. A Tiger month, the Direct Officer (正官) pattern, the writing conspicuous and noble. Pig (亥) and Rat (子) as Water with a Water period, noble. Pure Dog, a military office of the third grade. Monkey (申) and Pig in year and month, the four birth positions complete, greatly noble — or else it does not end well. Earth Pig (己亥) day at the Fire Tiger hour: born in spring, the officer strong, noble; summer and autumn middling; winter, the wealth strong, favourable. Tiger, Monkey, Ox, Snake (巳), Horse, Dragon and Dog in year or month, noble. The Shen Bai Jing (神白经) says: the Fire and Wood image is noble. Verse: a Yin Earth day at the Fire Tiger hour is out of the ordinary — in youth he has not met his chance, rich in letters; the period running to Rabbit (卯) ground produces the bright moon, and he walks level on the blue cloud to the imperial country. Verse: a Yin Earth day at the Fire Tiger hour, upright — the officer star and the Direct Resource (印绶) at their long life. The hall of learning and the triad are glad of glory; broad reading, writing, clever and handsome. With no clash and no breaking in year and month, his name certainly answers on the golden roll. The period running to the officer strong governs running through — a destiny of a high person of the upper rank.

If year and month have nothing to rescue it or lean on, it is emptily fine and unsubstantial, made and unmade. Where the month sees Yin Metal (辛) to check it and the self is strong, noble; a strong period is also favourable. Earth Ox (己丑) day at the Fire Rabbit hour: Monkey (申), Rat (子) and Dragon (辰), a military office. Pig (亥), Rabbit and Goat (未), glory and riches. Snake (巳), Rooster (酉) and Ox (丑) running a northeastern period, favourable. Earth Rabbit (己卯) day at the Fire Rabbit hour: Snake and Rooster in year or month, the checking well suited. Yang Metal (庚) and Monkey binding the Killings (煞), advancing in letters, greatly noble. A Rat month, punishing the Killings and meeting nobility, it governs military authority or a judicial office. Where the branches are pure Resource or a triad Wood frame, and the period runs to Tiger (寅) muddling the officer, meeting again a flowing year that clashes the period — a cruel death. Earth Snake (己巳) day at the Fire Rabbit hour: with nothing clashing or breaking, wealth and rank; Tiger, Horse (午) and Dragon in year or month, punishment, injury and unfavourable. A Pig month with Wood and Fire periods, noble. If born in spring with Yang Wood (甲) or Yin Wood showing, officer and Killings too strong — with something to check and transform them, also noble; otherwise ill and an early death. Earth Goat (己未) day at the Fire Rabbit hour: if not noble then wealthy; Rabbit, Dog (戌), Pig and Ox in year or month, favourable. Earth Rooster (己酉) day at the Fire Rabbit hour: nine parts made and ten broken; a Goat year, strong. Where year and month run through with the self produced and strong, and at the head of the stems there are Yin Metal and Yin Water (癸) to check the Yin Fire and Yin Wood, favourable. Earth Pig (己亥) day at the Fire Rabbit hour: born in autumn, the Seven Killings (偏官) held in check, wealth and rank. Spring, the life short. Summer, the self strong, favourable. Winter ordinary. Dragon, Dog, Ox and Goat months, noble. Verse: a Yin Earth day at the Rabbit hour, blessing breaks itself down — seeking name and seeking profit is altogether unsuited; where the palace of the self carries a punishing or controlling character, he leaves the home village and parts from the well, running east and west. Verse: a Yin Earth day meeting Fire Rabbit at the hour — The Overturned Meal (倒食) and Seven Killings crossing. Rooster, Yang Metal and Yin Metal break it and take the dregs; his thoughts cannot run through. Parents and the order of siblings are hard to hope for; the flower falls and afterwards the root puts out a shoot. Full and wanting, leaving the ancestors, he may make a household — rising in the hills and forests, beside the stream.

Tiger, Horse, Rat and Dragon in year or month, greatly noble. Verse: the Dragon hour on a Yin Earth day is no common thing — within is the money dragon guarding the vault; where Friend (比) and Rob Wealth (劫) are not met and the period runs favourable, it certainly makes wealth, rank and broad fields and farms. Truly the flower falls and blooms again; Ox and Dog punishing and clashing, the wealth flourishes. A Yin Earth (己) day born at the Earth Snake (己巳) hour: The Metal Spirit (金神) and Fire in accord with each other; not running through the month qi, read it as ordinary — and if the month qi runs through, glory in the top-grade (甲科) examinations. For a Yin Earth day at the Earth Snake hour: Metal and Fire bound together. Yin Earth takes Yang Fire (丙) as its Resource (印), and within Snake (巳) there is Yang Fire, hale and strong; Earth Snake is also the Metal Spirit, sitting on a Fire position and bound with it. If it carries a month of Fire qi, and the four pillars show no wealth star to break the Resource, and no wealth period is run, blessing comes out beyond the ordinary. If the month qi does not run through, or it is born in winter, emptily fine and unsubstantial. Not running through but getting a southern period is also favourable. Earth Ox (己丑) day at the Earth Snake hour: a Dragon (辰) month with a northwestern period, noble. Horse (午) and Goat (未), Fire strong, greatly noble. Monkey (申), Rat (子), Dog (戌) and Snake, also favourable. Earth Rabbit (己卯) day at the Earth Snake hour: holding a Dragon wealth vault between them, it governs great wealth. And Rabbit (卯) takes Snake as its Travel Horse (驿马); the two Yin Earth read together are called sitting on the horse. Born again in a Horse month, the prosperity star (禄) and horse both present — a noble destiny indeed. A Pig (亥) month, wealth coming to strong ground and the officer meeting its long life. A Snake month, the Metal Spirit meeting Fire — all govern great nobility. Earth Snake day at the Earth Snake hour: a Horse year or month, awe and authority blazing, the name and repute shining. If there is no the Yang Blade (羊刃) or Seven Killings (七煞) and no Horse character filling it in solid, and it does not offend the Void (空亡), it governs conspicuous nobility. Pig, Ox (丑), Dragon and Monkey in year or month running an eastern period, civil and military at the highest grade. This pattern is not the equal of Fire Snake (丁巳) and Fire Goat (丁未), because Yin Fire (丁)'s proper the prosperity star is there while Yin Earth only lodges its prosperity star. Earth Rooster (己酉) day at the Earth Snake hour: born in summer, the Metal Spirit entering a Fire country, conspicuously noble; the year period as before. Earth Pig (己亥) day at the Wood Ox (乙丑) hour: born in summer, resources fill the eye, taking his pleasure with a high bearing. Winter, ordinary; a Dog month with a southeastern period, a state preceptor, gold and purple. A Tiger (寅) month, also noble. Verse: a Yin Earth day meeting Earth Snake again at the hour — The Metal Spirit transformed and strong must suit it; stepping the southern Li, the south (离) period, wealth and officer show, and meeting the eastern Tiger and Rabbit is harsh besides. Verse: a Yin Earth day with Earth Snake at the hour — born in summer, Yang Fire, the Metal Spirit. Not meeting Dog, Pig, Yang Metal (庚) or Monkey, with nothing broken the sounds answer each other. One parent declines and one is strong; punishment and void make the work hesitate. Know that to come to prominence he changes the name and the gate — a period where Fire is strong, in the south.

Earth Ox (己丑) day at the Metal Horse hour: born in a Tiger (寅) month, noble; summer ill; autumn violent; winter, the wealth strong and the children few. Earth Rabbit (己卯) day at the Metal Horse hour: Yin Earth's prosperity star resides at Horse; with Yang Wood and Yang Fire and Tiger and Horse in year or month, greatly noble. A Rabbit (卯) month, the Killings strong and the Yang Metal binding it, authority and rank. Earth Snake (己巳) day at the Metal Horse hour: noble. Tiger, Horse and Dog (戌) months, the Metal Spirit (金神) entering a Fire country, read as Direct Resource (印绶), conspicuously noble. Clash, punishment, breaking and harm make calamity a hundredfold; flesh and blood and the six relations are ice and coals. If Yang Wood and Yang Fire are met in the pillars, the hidden-brilliance pattern, pure and easeful. In the month, the cassia is his to climb as he will — wealth and rank need no reckoning.

A Rooster month, Yin Earth at its long life, the Eating God meeting the prosperity star, enjoying it naturally. One account says loss and ill in the midst of nobility. Verse: a Yin Earth day meeting the Metal Goat hour — lamp and window silent, and who is there to know? the period running to wealth strong and officer strong besides, name and profit both complete; do not resent the delay. Verse: a Yin Earth day with Metal Goat at the hour — the Eating God sits on the officer vault and wants opening. Ox and Dog punishing and clashing show officer and wealth; shut and sealed, the road ahead is blocked. A gentleman has writing and blessing to help him; a common man is a merchant, remarkable and first. The key opens and blessing comes out, as the destiny should — money goes and money comes and is always there.

If it carries the Earth qi of the four seasons, or runs a period of Earth qi, favourable. If it loses the season of heaven with nothing to lean on and the month qi does not run through, if not poor then an early death; otherwise crippled, and wretched at the last. Earth Ox (己丑) day at the Water Monkey hour: a Rooster (酉) year or month with the Resource (印) showing at the stems, wealthy, noble and fond of propriety, a generous person. Dragon (辰) and Dog (戌) favourable. A Pig (亥) year, the great pattern of heaven clear and earth level. Tiger (寅) and Monkey, officer and nobility supporting each other — both favourable. Earth Rabbit (己卯) day at the Water Monkey hour: a Dragon month, mixed-qi wealth and officer, noble early. A Pig month with a southern period, fifth or sixth grade.
